Savages 4

Savages 4

Moving On by Asa

Even though we were outside, you could grill a full burger in the heat that was between all of us.
There was surprise on Ava’s ex’s face, Drew. He just stood there wondering what was going on.

You could see the flames beaming out of Ava’s eyes and Kiki was just looking for a place to hide but she had been caught out.
The Earth couldn’t open up quickly enough to consume her. Death at that time might have been a sweet relief for her.

Ava took a few steps towards Kiki and muttered,

“Why?”

You could see that Ava was only the wrong answer away from tears. She just couldn’t believe all that she had just heard.
Kiki stood still. The remorse and sadness was written along her face.
She wanted to say something but the words were trapped in there and it seemed like her mouth dried up faster than the trust Ava had for her disappeared.

“Kiki why?!
Tell me why!”

Ava yelled at her.
Ava raising her voice seemed to jolt Kiki into reality.
Kiki looked truly sad and apologetic. She took a step back and her head dropped.

What happened next surprised all of us, Kiki raised her head and said,

“”It’s not because you did anything to me.”

Ava swallowed hard as she still looked on the brink of a total meltdown. She replied.

“Then why Kiki. Why have you tried to hurt me like this?”

“You stopped being available!”

Kiki snapped back.
Her head high and sounding confident. She continued,

“You stopped being available. Trust me, it’s not that I wanted your man, I just wanted my friend back and I figured that if I remove all the men in your life, you would come to me for help.
You would come back to being my friend.”

A confused Ava replied,

“Kiki, when did I ever not make myself available to you as a friend? You were like a sister to me!”

Kiki straightened up and said,

“There was a time right when you first met Mono, I was going through it hard.
I had no one to talk to. I had called you on the phone the night before crying. You asked me to come over the next day after work which I did.
When I got to your place however, you were on the phone the whole time talking to Mono. I remember sitting on your couch thinking this call would only last a few minutes but you talked for hours till I fell asleep on the couch.
By the time I woke up, you had to leave for work.
That period was so hard for me and you barely had my time because of some guy that would easily have taken the pussy if I threw it at him the right way.

So that day after your party that you and Drew got into it, I saw Mono leaving and I thought, since he was being available for her, let me have him for myself.

I wasn’t trying to hurt you since I thought you didn’t want him like that. I am sorry if you were hurt but it was not my intention and I stand by that.”

Ava was already in tears. She remembered that day and I did too.
That still didn’t seem like fair “punishment” on Kiki’s part and she came towards Ava to hug her.

Ava pushed her away and said,

“No Kiki, you are wicked for this. For all that you did.
I might not have been there for you but it was never out of malice or trying to hurt you.
You are selfish.
You tried to hurt so many parties because of yourself.
I only even called Drew and started talking to him again because of you. Because you said so.
So how do you justify that too. By telling me that I caused that too.
Did you need my attention then too when you were trying to have sex with Mono?

We can’t be friends Kiki. I am truly scared of you”

Ava turned around and said to me as she walked towards Drew’s car,

“I’m sorry about all of this”

She walked around the car and took one more glance at Kiki who was now crying and entered the passenger’s side of Drew’s car.
I was taken back by what was happening as Drew lowered himself into the car and began putting his seatbelt on.

I hurriedly walked around the car and tapped the passenger side glass, Ava lowered the window and I asked,

“Ava are you really going to leave with him after all of this?”

She looked at me as she wiped her tears away and said,

“Mono, I am sorry”

That was it.
That’s all she said and started the car and drove off.
Nothing more.
I stood there for a few minutes in shock before I gathered myself.

“Wow”

Came out of my mouth as I walked towards my car. There was tears in my eyes now as I felt like I had been sucker punched.
I was about to get into my car when Kiki asked,

“Mono, can I please get a ride to my car, it’s parked on the other side”

I scanned her from top to bottom and let out a sarcastic laugh before saying,

“You have no fucking shame”

I started my car and drove off

…….

The days dragged on.
Cloudy afternoons, cold nights and an empty heart; I just tried to fight the depression.
It felt like karma had come to hit me so hard.
There were times when I truly wanted to cry but I couldn’t even bring the tears out of my eyes.
Yet, my heart wailed.

I knew the feeling very well. That empty feeling.
It was fascinating to find that the feeling that meeting Ava had helped, had now returned because of her.
A different kind of emptiness. A sense of feeling wronged and cheated.
I just wanted to yell at her but show her that I loved her in the same breath.

It was about 9pm that evening and I was sitting on my balcony overlooking the beach when I heard a car pull into the driveway right below me, I looked down and it was a familiar face.
She looked up and said,

“Will you come down here and help me get some of these items into the house?”

It was my mother.

I made my way down and I exited the elevator.
When I reached her, I gave her a hug and a peck on the cheek like I always have since I was a boy.
She teased me and said,

“Aww, you kiss like your father when he is sad.
Come here son.”

She gave me a really big hug and I really liked it. But my macho self would have never asked for another one.
My mother had gone grocery shopping for me. As I made my way towards the elevator, struggling with all the bags because I didn’t want to have to come on a second trip to the car, she laughed and said,

“I know you’re probably not eating well since you’re busy crying over a girl that was never even your girlfriend”

I looked back at her and she shrugged.
That was my mother for you.

As I placed the bags on the counter, I said,

“Mom, you just won’t understand. Like I really thought she was the one”

She smiled as she put a bottle of our favorite wine in the freezer and said,

“She was just someone. And not the one.
Be glad you found that out now. Not two years down the road when you would have built your whole world around her.
It would have come tumbling down and you would have been crushed beyond repair.
It may not seem like it now but this was a win for you. So pick yourself up and get back out there.
She’s going to come back and beg you anyway.
Trust me.
And it’s only a matter of time before you find the one that will complement you and provide real security for your heart.

Till then, I have more than enough love for you. So come and help me chop these onions. Are you down for some curry and rice?”

She knew I was down, that was such a trick question. I nodded and she reached up to give me a hug with her short self.
She was right. This was a win for me and I just hadn’t seen it yet.
We talked for hours as we ate about everything and then I went into my room and made my bed, so she could sleep in it while I slept on the couch.
I returned to the living room and she had passed out. I covered her with a blanket and headed back into my room.
I sat down on my bed and wore my socks as I prepared to crawl into bed.

My phone buzzed.

I picked it up and it was a text from Ava. It read,

“Mono, are you up?
Can we talk please?”

……

I didn’t reply her that night.
Even though I had wanted to so badly.
I resisted the urge and kept to myself.

It had been two weeks since that night; and now roughly seven weeks since that day outside Ava’s apartment.
Things had somewhat turned for me. I had begun talking to someone new and I was starting to forget the Ava fiasco.
That Friday fateful evening, I was on my drive from work when I received a call from a “blocked” number. I answered out of curiosity.
It was Ava.

“Long time Mono, how have you been?”

I rolled my eyes and said,

“Good. Yourself?”

Small talk always irritated me but I tried to hide my irritation.
I didn’t want to have the conversation, I didn’t want to hear her side anymore. I wasn’t going to be drawn back into that mess with her. And I knew I still loved and cared for her. So I had to keep her at arms length.
I quickly said,

“Ava, I’m driving right now. Can we talk later?”

She replied,

“Oh okay. When is a good time?”

“I’m not sure but I’ll let you know though. Aight bye.”

Click.
Call ended.
I switched lanes and made my way down the freeway.
I was going to do everything in my power to avoid going back to her. Besides, I had a date I had to get ready for.
And I was really excited.

……

Knock.
Pause.
Knock Knock
Pause
Knock knock knock
Long pause.

I could hear the knocks in my head as I drifted towards consciousness. I could feel a cold but gentle tapping on my shoulder. I turned around and she said,

“There is someone at the door”

I sluggishly got up and stretched. My “morning wood” brought a smile to her face. I reached for my shorts and put them on, a shirt next to hide my failed attempt at a summer bod.
She went back into hiding under the sheets and I assumed to sleep.

I put on my slippers and made my way towards the door. I stopped as I entered the living room as I noticed clothes and her shoes laying all over the living room.

Flashbacks from the night before sailed through my head as I smiled. I remembered her taking me in on the couch and my returning the favor on the kitchen counter.
It was in that moment I remembered the carpet burn on my left knee from driving into her while the candles burned out.
It was a great night.
I smiled again as another round of knocks rung.
I arrived at the door and leaned towards the peephole and simultaneously said,

“Who is it?”

My answer was given before she could respond.
It was Ava.

“What was she doing here?”

I asked myself before she responded and said,

“It’s Ava.
Can I come in?”

My heart skipped a beat.
I actually became nervous for a second. I hadn’t seen her in weeks.
Seeing her was making my heart race now and I couldn’t contain it.
I didn’t know what to say next.
And then I remembered why we hadn’t seen each other in a week and the things I had heard about her and her situation,

“What do you want Ava?”

I asked.

She paused as I looked at her through the peephole and said,

“To be very honest Mono, I want you.
I just hope you would want me back”

I scoffed.
Want her?
Why would I want her?
Or would I want her?
I began to question myself as she continued,

“Mono, I realized that I made a mistake going back to Drew.
I should have stayed and waited for you.
Listened to you and worked things out. I was so blinded by the love I felt for him that I went back because Kiki made me believe that you were not worth it and I foolishly believed her.

Until I found out on Drew’s phone that they had been exchanging naked pictures and having sex”

I laughed and said,

“Oh that wasn’t clear to see that day. I could see from how he didn’t say a word that he wasn’t clean.
So Kiki got to him?
Now isn’t that a story to be told.”

I noticed her shuffle in the hallway as she said,

“Mono, I’m really sorry. Please open the door so we can talk.
I really want to work through this”

I replied

“Ava, a month ago, I might have cared but now, it’s too late.
I don’t care anymore.
Channel that energy into someone that cares, I am done. It’s too late”

“Mono, please. You know it’s not too late.
I know you still care deep down. Please open the door”

She was right.
I still cared.
That’s how I am. I wanted to open the door.
I was going to open the door. I had to forgive her.
She had truly made me happy at some point, so I knew I had to forgive her.
I placed my hand on the cold door knob as she said,

“Just open the door and look at me”

I knew what opening that door meant. Memories began to sail through my head as I placed my head on the door and thought to myself hard.
Was I making a mistake?

I began to fiddle with the keychain as I turned the door knob and through my open bedroom door, I heard her move.
I turned around and she was staring at me; hopeful.

“Mono, Kimon, please give me one more chance.
I promise I won’t treat you the way I did again.”

Ava said.
The girl in bed sat up and I twisted the knob to make sure it was shut properly.
I pushed away from the peephole. A smile appeared on her face, she had a clear view of the door the entire time from the bedroom.
A huge smile covered my face.

I walked back into the room, laid down and pulled her in for a kiss.
She said, do you want to talk about it?
I said,

“No.
It’s not important. Right now, you’re all that matters”

She leaned in and planted a kiss on my lips and she got up to make breakfast.
She stretched out her hand and said,

“I need a shirt, please”

Her breasts greeted me with the morning respect as my hardened member twitched in approval between my legs.
I pointed to the closest. She reached in and bent down, her lower lips showing for a brief moment.
I almost jumped out of the bed to devour her but I held still.
She smiled and headed out of the room closing the door behind her.
I sat there smiling as I had locked Ava out. It felt symbolic to my feelings towards her.
My phone began to ring and I picked up saying,

“Nate, what’s good bro?”

“I’m good fam. What are you up to?”

He asked. I smiled and said,

“Waiting for breakfast.”

He picked up on it and he said,

“Oh shit!
Who is this new one?”
“Her name is Ashley…. She is..”

I was replying when he cut in and said,

“Wait!
Doesn’t Ava have a cousin named Ashley that she mentioned before”

I paused and said,

“Ava just came to my place”

“Huh?!”

He replied and then continued to say,

“Did she see her cousin?”

I replied,
“Nah… They distant family friends. Haven’t seen each other in 5 years.
Besides, I didn’t even open the door for Ava. I almost did but I had to look to the future”

He said,

“True… true…. So how did you meet her?”
I sat up and said,
“She actually found me by fate at the community college when I went to sign up for piano classes.
We hit it off.
She told me she knows Ava and I was honest about our dealings and she still wanted me, so here we are.
I’m just going on the ride”
I could hear Nate laughing his head off as he said,

“Mono, you know you’re the greatest savage of all right?
Like wow.
So when are you going to tell Ava you’re dating her family or shall I say friend?”

I laughed and said,

“Family friend brother, family friend. And she invited me to their family reunion thing this weekend. Barbecue chicken and broken roasted hearts will be served.
Oh what fun we shall have”

Nate shook his head I could tell. He sounded like you sound now, as you say #WhatTheHeckMan

The call ended shortly after and I placed the phone down just as Ashley walked into the room with a tray of food she placed on my bedside and said,

“Was that Nate?”

I nodded.

She pulled the covers off and climbed into the bed.

She looked up at me as she pulled my shorts down. My member was at his hardest.
Slowly, she kissed up my thighs as she worked her way towards my hard member. She opened her mouth and her lips took me in.
I kicked my head back and a huge smile covered my face.
In most situations, you can avoid winners or losers but here, I was clearly winning.

And it felt good.
Revenge, I heard is best served slow, sloppy and warm. And Ava would eventually agree but till then….
It’s #WhatTheHeckMan

Savages need to feed. Don’t be their prey on the name of love.
There are Kiki’s, Ava’s, Drew’s, Nate’s and even Mono’s out there in the world today. Who are you?
haver you ever experienced one of those people or been one of those people?

I wrote “Savages” because of an experience watching and “emotional vulture” come into someone’s life and ruin it silently.
Kinda like Kiki but with the stealth of Drew.
You see, it is not everyone that smiles with you that brushed their teeth. And it’s not every person that you call friend that will bail you out if you ever got arrested.
The true character of those closest to you is something that you should always evaluate.
Even people with initially good intentions can become Savages.

There are good people in the world. But you already know what I feel about the concept of “good” people.
I’ll you conclude on Mono’s character but after his interaction with Ava and Kiki, he could claim justification to be a kind of way and begin collecting hearts.
But again, there is good in this world and it is our duty to grow, cherish and pass it on to others.

Prey.
Oh the prey.
“Stay woke” they say. Because you are paranoid doesn’t mean someone isn’t following you.
Guard your happiness with all you have.
For whatever reason, there are people out there who can’t stand to you see you happy. To see you up.
SO BE VIGILANT.
Prayerful and concern yourself with reading between the lines. When it comes to your heart, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Remember, not everything is meant to be shared with others.
And I implore you to concern yourself with the power you give people to affect your happiness by the things you allow them to hold in your life.

There are Savages everywhere and there might be one in you too, who knows?
My last piece of advice is that if you decide to prey on someone, make sure you “kill” them all the way. Because if they recover, you have just created a deadlier Savage and set them loose in the world and I’m sure we don’t need anymore than we have.

Above all Ladies and Gentlemen, keep your head up and do good.
It’s yours truly; The Wordsmith for #WhatTheHeckMan.

PLEASE CATCH UP ON PART 2 of the “PAINS” series first HERE

Pains 2: http://wp.me/p3GjtC-ke via @adewus4real

The pages turn

Each new experience

Like a marker to denote that particular stage

The memories vary

Exploring you as a person

Pulling you here and there

Beyond range

Sometimes into a new phase

Love and loss

Your outcome can be unexpected

Like the outcome of a coin toss

But with each breath you build more

Love more

Want more

Pains will come forth

But your heart is your greatest asset

It is in there

You can truly understand your worth

And it is beautiful

-The Wordsmith

.     .     .     .     .

I just couldn’t sleep.

Dele was next to me snoring away while I just thought back. I couldn’t blame him.

It was 3 am and I had spent the better part of the night complaining to him and Tolani about the situation. Dele had comforted me but here I was awake again.

He told me that he would accompany me to speak with my father.

I couldn’t appreciate him enough but I just kept on thinking.

My dad was not the one to want to remarry.

Or so I thought.

I couldn’t help but think back to that night at the palace with my father and my aunt discussing.

I felt like my aunt had a hand in this whole thing.

Oh how I couldn’t stand her.

I remember when we returned to Lagos after my mother’s burial.

My father went back to work in full force.

And he asked me to go and live with my aunt.

His reasoning was that I needed to be around people that made me happy.

Because he invested so much time into his work, he didn’t want me to feel neglected.

So off to my aunt’s house in Ijegun I went.

I was only supposed to be there for the summer break but it was somehow extended.

Living with my aunt was hell.

My cousins were fine and a pleasure to be around but my aunt herself was annoying.

She would always pick on me and ask me to do things for her when she could have asked her maid or her children.

It’s hard to explain now but there was a time that I was so depressed because I lived with her.

Every time I tried to explain to my father, he would look at me like I was lying. But I knew what I was up against anyways, it would have been hard for anyone to believe that his sister was mistreating his princess.

I remember one evening that highlighted how much I hated her.

It was a Saturday and she had distributed the chores to us in the morning before she left.

Upon return, some of the work though completed, was not completed to her satisfaction.

So when we all went as a group to ask for money to go and see a movie, she blantantly said

“No”

I was fine with it because we somewhat deserved it. I went into my room and took a nap.
I woke up about an hour later and I came out of my room.

Everyone was gone, except my aunt.

“Aunty, where did they go?”

I asked

She looked at my from head to toe and said

“To the movies”

I was shocked and trying to wrap my head around how that happened and I said

“Aunty, how come, I really wanted to go”

She sat up and looked me dead in the eyes and said

“Do you think you deserve to go to the movies?

Come on go to your room and find something to do”

It hurt.

It really did.

And imagine, I had just woken up, so going back to sleep was almost impossible. I was furious.

I missed my mom and I just lay there, knowing that if she was alive, I would never have gone through all that.

I called my dad and he listened but I still stayed there.

This time around I was hoping he would listen and act.

…  …

We came to the studio where my dad was working to have lunch with him.

He had the food ordered in and we just sat there, going through small talk stuff.

And then I opened by saying

“Daddy, you know how much I love you.

But I am not sure about this you remarrying thing”

There was surprise written across his face.

He finally gathered himself to say

“Bola, how.. how.. how did you find out?”

I replied

“Daddy, is that what matters right now?

Why are you getting remarried?

Is this aunty’s doing?”

He was taken aback and he became defensive of her as he said

“No, no, no, no…

This has nothing to do with her.”

He sat up straight and said

“This is for me.

You are all I have but you will soon become all Dele has.

Your mother used to be all I had and God knows best but she now only resides in my heart.

I would have never thought that I would meet anyone to replace your mother. And I am not replacing her but this woman makes me happy.

And Bola, I need to be happy.”

I sighed as I could see the sincerity in his eyes.

He continued

“I actually wanted you to meet her first but I guess the word travels fast.

Bola, she makes me smile.

She cares about me. She respects me.

And I know she will adore you.

I am not looking for someone to be your mother, I am looking for someone to love me and be my partner as Dele is yours”

I understood him.

But I had to make sure that my selfishness was understood.

“Daddy, so you’re promising me that you are not trying to replace mummy?”

He smiled and got up.

He walked around the table and got down into a squatting position.

He held my hands and looked into my eyes and said

“Bola, It was always about you and your mom. I am not the star of the show but I never wanted to but I am getting older and I need love. You are the star of a family, but I am a forgotten man. Your mother was everything to me and you know she would not be replaced ever but I need to attempt to enjoy some facets of life without her.
You are my heart and I will like your blessing before I proceed but I want you to know that your mother will remain the greatest woman in my life because she gave me a legacy, she gave me love, she gave me happiness and most importantly, she gave me you.”

I couldn’t help but smile.

I burst out laughing after he said

“Excuse me ma, teacher… can I please get up?”

I nodded and he planted a kiss on my forehead.

He smiled and pressed a button on his intercom and said to his secetary

“Wumi, can you please ask Abike to join us in my office?”

He turned around and smiled.

I smiled and swiveled my seat as I said under my breath

“No babies sha.”

He said

“Huh?”

I gave Dele a high five as we laughed to my response

“Weef.. Weef… In the Lavest”

My dad stood there confused but more surprises were in store for all of us.

.   .   .     .   .

Most Sundays were the same. The mornings filled with lifted hands at church and the lifting hands from frying pans as you avoid the hot oil.
Sundays are synonymous with rice day, so plantains were an essential part of the process.

I was in the kitchen frying the plantain while Tolani was on the phone with her new boyfriend, Sadiq.

The whirlwind ride they were on was actually very cute to watch. It reminded me of when Dele and I first started dating. Well more accurately, when I first started to fall in love.

Every joke was funnier.

Butterflies everywhere.

It was actually very refreshing to see Tolani happy.

I put all the plantains in the basket to drain all the oil.

Dishing in the rice into the bowl as I led to the dining room to table the meal, I was actually thinking of a bottle of wine that I really liked.
I was hoping that Dele had remembered to buy some.

I placed the dishes on the table and I stood back up. I must have done it too fast because I began to feel nauseas.
I held my head for a second.

This had been happening frequently the last few weeks but I figured it was just work stress.

Today felt a bit off.

I walked into the living room to find my best friend cupcaking on the phone, and I said

“T-baby, you get any more of those nausea meds?”

She didn’t hear me the first time, so she said

“Sadiq, hold on”

She turned to me and said

“What did you say love?”

I motioned touching my head as I said

“Do you still have any more nausea meds?”

She said

“Oh yeah, they are in the meds bag on the counter over there”

Pointing to her cabinet in the dining area.

Then she followed up and said

“You okay?”

I stopped in my tracks and said

“I don’t know. I’ve been feeling off the last few weeks.
And just lightheaded but I think I just need to drink more water and sit down”

Tolani gave me a look and said

“You sure it’s not the work you’ve been getting”

I turned and said

“you know I haven’t seen my stuff, even though I switched to the water pills?”

Her eyebrows raised, she smirked and said

“You sure?

You might want to check that out”

I laughed and turned my head, now facing her, I lowered my voice and said

“I think I would know if I was pregnant”

so Sadiq on the phone wouldn’t hear

She scoffed and said

“Sha use the pregnancy test I the bathroom, in the bottom drawer to the right. Just to be sure”

I popped the pills and I placed the glass on the bathroom sink as my mind now began to race.

Dele and I had been having unprotected sex for some months now. And the entire world knows that birth control pills are not a 100%.

I picked up the stick and looked at it before I glanced at my phone, it had been 3 minutes.

I looked closely to the observation panel on the stick and it had two pink lines on it.

My heart dropped.

Tolani was right.

I looked at myself in the mirror and took in a deep breath.

I heard the car pull up, Dele and Sadiq had just arrived.

I stuffed the stick in between paper towels and I washed my hands. I fixed my hair and straightened out my clothes.

Stepping out of the bathroom, Tolani was standing about 5ft away and she came up to me.

She could tell from my face as she gave me a hug. She squeezed me tight and then said

“Are you going to tell him?”

I said

“No”

She looked at me and said

“Okay love”

Tolani opened the door and the guys greeted us,

Dele came up to me and said

“Hello my Queen”

as he gave me a big hug.

My heart slowed down. This was safe.

We felt safe in his hands.

Painkillers

Painkillers

It all started from me wanting to be your painkiller

Now you’ve got me over dosing on painkillers

The wounds you gave me cut deeper

Fuck it I think I might need a spiritual healer

You came into my heart with promise

You told me you would be different

But here I am

Getting drunk again

Trying to make memories of you

Distant

….

We were supposed to be great

It was the plan to dominate

But you never took the time

To appreciate

Me

You drove me to the point where I had to investigate

You started to come home late

We barely ate

Together

Slowly I drifted away

Telling myself

Why bother

 ….

No humble pie

Just pride

Like a hardened criminal

You ignored when I would cry

Telling me to stop

Forcing me to appreciate the shoes that you bought

You forgot me

The promises you made me

My heart was aching

Slowly I could feel it breaking

And it was you

This time it was you doing the orchestrating

….

Two steps apart

I initially waited for the walk sign

Then ignored the blinking warnings

Straight into moving traffic

I moved my life from static

I placed a bet on my happiness

I was tired of mediocre

Frustrated with all the sadness

I needed to be cared for

Loved and adored

But waiting for you to wake up

That was a luxury I couldn’t afford

….

It’s been

I’m not exactly sure how long it’s been

The mailman just left

And he reminded me of you

The way you initially were consistent

Showing up as your promised

You held me close

With a hot wet towel

You washed my wounds

Your sweet words helped me heal

Then you got bored

Drifted away from me

I could feel it

All the sadness that you were blind to see

Returned and consumed me

….

I became weak again

Now I can no longer feel

Yet I still think of you

You broke your promises

But holding on to you

I’m like a hoarder who can’t get rid of things

I so desperately wished you were the one

But with each rising sun

I realize that the strength in me

Should rely on no one

I’ll get it right

But for now

One more sip

One more drink

I need to wash down the pill

It’s hard to think

The pain my heart feels is real

You know that feeling you get when you start to recognize how much of a foothold they have in your life. You become drawn to them.
All you want to do is hear their voice, see their face, tell them your worries and fears, share your day and then you start to remember. Not again.
You remember the last time you felt like this and the pain that came through.

You remember how it felt so different trying to address life.
Hurting and hating, you never wanted to show vulnerability again. Then you build up your walls and continue to scar yourself in the process and eventually, the wall is up. You settle behind it to lick your wounds and fortify yourself but soon enough, someone else finds you.
She’s a bit more patient than your last, more prayerful too. He’s more communicative and passionate.

And they have come in, wanting to be your painkillers. But you’re scared, terrified that you’d feel it all again. All that unbearable pain, those tears, the anxiety.

Today, my #WordsOfWednesday are not that hard to understand. My message is one I got from a friend “Guard Your Heart”.

You deserve pure love and happiness and honesty and respect. Anyone who comes into your life should give that and if not, let them know and if not changes, let them go.
Often times, we try to self medicate alongside being repeatedly hurt by someone close to us. It is unhealthy.

But that doesn’t mean completely shut yourself off from being loved or cared for. There are some “good” people out there with good hearts that want to take care of you and you should let them. At least try.
But remember even when you go to the doctor and they prescribe you meds, they often come with side effects.
The new person(s) will not be perfect, they might hurt you in a new way too but always remember that a surgical procedure that failed will not be repeated. People that hurt you that havent changed, should never be allowed back in. Guard your heart.

If someone comes into your life and they want to help you heal, if you are ready or think you’re ready, give them a chance.
But if the pain returns or is unbearable, listen to the words of the tv commercial

“If symptoms persist, flush them down the toilet” – The Wordsmith.

You are somebody’s drug. Someone’s painkiller. Are you healing or inflicting more pain?

I apologize for slacking on #WordsOfWednesday but take my word, I am back. Another round of “Behind The Writer” is in motion and will be rolled out during the weekend with Pains 3.
Get excited and the Rants are available too. Download and share!

“I reckon there are good men and women left in the world but they are few and almost impossible to find.
I don’t spend my time searching for them through the chaos. I just imagine their good deeds will eventually shine the light on them.
There won’t be many chances to impact a life better than the one you have now. Leave a positive mark.

People are easy to manipulate as the situations change but let your integrity speak for you. Let you message be the same.

Do good and love hard.

Say a prayer whenever you can.

No good deed goes to waste. And someday you may need one and you may not have the power to dictate.

Give love and do well. In this life, you are only a chapter in a page less book”

                                                                                                                                                             – The Wordsmith

The story was that my parents wanted more.

More like me.

My family members always told me that I was the perfect baby. I rarely cried and I always smiled.

More importantly, I always slept through the night.

But they wanted another me. Well they wanted a boy.

I think secretly my father did but my mother was probably content with having just me. You’ll understand why at some point.

I was always thought that there was a part of me that needed more focus. Like I was not fully grasping who I was. But life is full of unique ways to change stories, I just always felt mine would go a certain way.

Our life was easy.

Well mostly easy.

Argentina, London, Australia, Gabon, and Sweden to name a few countries we toured together as a family; mother, my father and I.

My life plan was simple; be better than your parents. Funny enough, none of the pressure came from them.

But they were such amazing people that I automatically knew that I had to be better than both of them.

I envied my mother.

I watched how my father looked at her each day and I craved that sight. I craved that love and care that I saw in his eyes towards her.

Hating my mother was not an option don’t get me wrong. I didn’t envy her because I wanted to be her exactly, I guess I should clarify and say that I wanted the attention her person commanded.

She had always commanded attention and respect.

Her father and my grandfather, had overthrown his brother for the crown in our hometown.

At the time of this happening, my mother had not been born. Essentially, my grandfather had wrestled for power even though he didn’t have a successor lined up.

My mother and her siblings came a few months after the “coup”.

It moved seamlessly, that my uncle would take over after my grandfather.

My mother was the first-born and she was like a son to my grandfather.

Tough in power and wise with her care to the people, the people loved her.

Everyone loved her.

She was around for eight years before my uncle was even born, so lets just say that the people had really gotten used to her.

There was a story told to me about how she acted during my grandfather’s 60th birthday party.

Tradition states that the King showcased the blessings the land has given him.

These included material things like cars, livestock, clothing and the most important of them all; his children.

For whatever reason, the story states that my mother had decided not to be paraded. She refused to go out in the usual order; after the livestock.

The story says that she blatantly told the people in charge

“I am daddy’s favorite so I am going before the cars and all”

They also never failed to mention that she was only 8yrs old at the time. Some have questioned the validity of that incident but never questioned that it’s something she could have said.

I have always found that story hard to believe but I have never doubted that my mother was that woman.

I think it was evident, the amount of control she had in the household when she returned from college to inform my grandfather that she was marrying my father, a radio producer and no one resisted.

She was highly opinionated and respect but always humble and submissive to my father.

He married royalty but kept his normal life, he was the executive producer of some of the biggest shows on 103.5FM in Lagos.

We primarily lived in Lagos but had houses in various cities around the world. We traveled at will but one of the key values held by mother was the power of family and it’s togetherness.

So whenever I was home from school, we would always eat dinner as a family together. The table made and all, we would share stories, catch up and just be one.

The ability to influence things like that was the trait, I wanted the most from my mother and I think she knew it too.

.       .     .     .       .

“Susan, you know I left the money right there.

Are you sure you didn’t see it?”

I asked one of our maids

“No madam. I no see am”

I felt like she was lying to me but I wasn’t about to go searching her room.

I stared at her and then I walked away.

I could hear chatter in the kitchen between her and the cook.

Our house in Lagos, in the Lekki area was huge. Really too much space than we would ever need and it truly sucked to be the only child.

Remember how I talked about my parents wanting another kid?

Well, this was why. I basically grew up with maids as my only friends and I know my dad wanted me to have siblings but particularly a brother.

My mother being the first for my grandfather, if she didn’t present a boy, the crown would skip our household and settle on the head of my uncle.

This particular afternoon, I was on my midterm break from my boarding school, which was about an hour outside town.
Somewhat like the Spring break given to those in American schools but it was our refresher.

I was planning to go out with my friends that evening and I was particularly irked that I thought I had put the money in particular spot but I couldn’t find it.

I was in my room getting ready when I heard a knock on the door.

“Come in”

I said

The door opened slowly and Susan appeared. She immediately got down on her knees and began begging.

In her right hand, she waved the money I was just looking for earlier

“Madam, I am sorry. I no mean to take am

please I just want to send am to my family for village”

I got up and smiled.

I walked up to her and I pulled her up.

“It’s okay.”

Now I referred to her as Susan but I grew up calling her Aunty Susan. She was old enough to be my mother and she along with my mother, raised me.

I knew she had the money but I just wanted her to tell me.

I walked with her to the bed as she cried profusely

“Aunty Susan, I am not upset you took the money.

I am angry you did not tell me you needed it. You know I would have given it to you freely”

She nodded and said

“I was just afraid ma

My daughter wants to enter Unifasity and I don’t have enough money to pay.

I sorry ma”

I gave her a hug and handed the money back to her.

“Aunty, next time, tell me.

Stop crying. I will give you the rest of what you need when I get back.

Okay?”

She nodded as I let her out of the room and finished getting ready.

Now before you assume that I am some self righteous person, recognize that if my mother had found out about the incident, Susan would have been dismissed.

I was able to get the money from my mother. I can’t even remember what lie I told to get it but I did.

I remember returning to school and feeling accomplished but bigger tests of my character were coming along the way.

 .     .     .     .       .

“What do you mean that Idris Elba is not sexy?

Have you seen the man?”

Tolani was the queen of arguments like these.

It was a Saturday evening and we waited before dinner time.

In the girls hostel, we hung around our bunks and just argued about vain attractions to men some of us might never meet.

“Tolani, remember the guy that played Oscar Grant?

Or the guy from House of Payne, the darker one?

Those men are sexy!

Everyone just says Idris Elba is sexy because a lot of old women just want him”

Tolani, my best friend always found a way to turn a debate on it’s head.

She said

“So you’re telling me that if Idris Elba walked in through that door right now, you wont let him go to work on you?”

I giggled and looked at my half naked body and said

“He wouldn’t know what to do with me”

Everyone in the room burst into laughter and we went about getting ready.

I was putting on some make up (A contraband at our school at the time) when I heard my name

“Bola Adekanmi…. Bola Adekanmi”

I turned around and said

“Yes”

It was one of the aides calling my name.

I walked up to her and said

“Yes… who’s looking for me o”

with a smile across my face.

She looked at me with seriousness in her eyes and said

“Get dressed. The principal wants to see you”

I actually wasn’t scared. Unlike most students, when I was called to the principals office, I didn’t actually panic.

The principal was friends with my parents, so I never really worried.

I arrived about 10 minutes later at the principal’s office. She was in her seat with her head down.

“Bola, your parents have asked for you to come home.”

I just assumed it was because we were going on a trip. After all, my birthday was only a month away. But graduation was also only two months away, so I wasn’t sure.

We had planned as a family to visit Spain in the summer for my birthday.

Maybe it was an early birthday surprise, I thought to myself.

Either way, I was going home and I was good with that.

I greeted our driver as I got into the car

“Oga Wisdom

How body na?”

He forced a smile and greeted me.

He drove me back to the hostel where I grabbed a few more things and then we were on our way.

I was actually kind of pleased to be going home. I had been missing my bed for a few days.

The drive was okay. It was evening time and not too much traffic.

Oga Wisdom wasn’t talking to me much but I didn’t make anything of it. I was listening to the radio and grooving away.

We arrived at my house at about 9pm.

When we showed up, there were cars everywhere and a lot of people.

Our cars were parked under the shed to the right but nothing explained all the other cars.

I continued to feed into my theory that I was getting a surprise birthday party.

The driver parked the car and I hopped out.

When I walked into the house, it felt like there was a cloud; a thick cloud.

There were a lot of shoes in the front of the living room.

I could hear crying and wailing.

I wasn’t sure what was going on.

My heart was starting to race.

My palms got sweaty.

I was reaching for my necklace. It was something I fiddled with whenever I got nervous.

I made my way closer to the living room and the cries got louder.

I finally stood in the doorway.

Everyone instantly turned towards me. I could see the sadness written all over their faces.

They looked at me with pity.

I just thought my grandfather had passed.

But I scanned the room, and there he was.

Sitting in the corner of the room with his guards around him.

Tears in his eyes.

I knew.

I looked at my dad, his head in his palms.

I scanned the room again. Susan was on the ground in the corner of the room crying. Hard.

I wanted to open my mouth and ask but I couldn’t find the words.

My brain wasn’t linking up with my tongue

I wanted to cry but I froze.

I wanted to ask why but I knew nobody would answer right.

I want to move but I froze.

My everything was gone.

And in that moment, my whole world became void.

.     .     .       .       .

My interaction with you was like a pencil

Gliding along my heart

You register unique memories

Trading what I felt with you is impossible to imagine

Falling in you is something I would repeat gladly

Today, the memories we shared keep me warm

I dig deep and find you through every storm

….

I can’t seem to understand why you left so soon

I can’t understand why you left him too

We’re lost

But home within ourselves

Alone

You gave us love

And left before we could share

 …..

Things are not the same

My heart now lives in pain

Losing you doesn’t cause as much hurt as it did that first night

Now I have no one in my corner

No one to hear my plight

Every night I close my eyes

I imagine myself on a flight

One-way ticket from here

Destination to wherever I can set my eyes on you

And keep you in sight

Mummy, I wish you could hold me for one more night

My heart is void

And sore from war

From battling my demons and not allowing myself through the trap door

I miss you

Real Talk (The New Way of Attractions)

[audio mp3=”https://adewus4real.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/jacob-banks-say-something-cover.mp3″

Say Something Cover by Jacob Banks

It’s 4am.

Why am I up?

Its you

I should be asleep but let me share the truth

The truth for me is you

Socks on my feet

Curled under my sheets

My face is beat

I shouldn’t have makeup on right now

It should be my head wrap securing my crown

Carrying me into dream land

But hearing your voice is all I need

With you I want to share my thoughts

It’s late and I have to be up at the crack of dawn

But let’s just sit here and talk

…..

It’s been eight months

Yet all we do is talk

Now you no longer want to hear my thoughts

Everything I say sounds like I nag

Having you in my life was once a reason to brag

But now I carry my aching heart in my handbag

I’m struggling to not drown in my feelings

But you won’t answer my calls

And if you do

You always promise to call back

But you never call

And all I really want to do is talk

It’s 4am

……

Suddenly there are other people

Those long five conversations till four have stopped

Now three of us make up this triangle

Me, you and this growing space

I miss when it was just us two

But now you’re not available to return the attention or concern

It’s now too much to expect one call from you

It’s 4am and I’m retweeting the new girl you’re talking to

……

It’s 4am

And I haven’t heard from you

I’m scrolling down your timeline

This is the only way I connect to you

Oh you have a doctors appointment

I didn’t even know you hated hospitals

I’m careful not to double tap as I make my way

Down your Instagram page

I am 64 weeks down the way

I loved it when you had your hair in those box braids

But I keep waiting for you

I still keep the faith

But i admit I’m getting tired and I might not be able to wait

……

Fleeting attractions

Like Nitro gas

We burn out fast

Spilling out our lives

Into each other’s palms

Building dreams in clouds so high

But our eagle is ground when the clouds cry

Drenched in emptiness and regret

But remembering you’re the best I’ve had yet

I want more

Like I had wanted you

Now I communicate my feelings through retweets and emojis blue

Hoping that my borrowed words reach

Hoping they catch you

I’m here hurting as you announce your new conquest

And I’m hoping you say something

But you’re saying I’ve given up on you

It’s 4am

And I’m talking to you again

Through an unresponsive screen

Realizing that all we had were muddled dreams

…..

That dreaded “talking phase”. Oh that phase.

Think, how many people are you “talking” to right now? Why is it so convenient for the guy you want to hide behind being in a talking state?

There are many great men and women today scared of commitment and void of effort that they just sit in the talking phase.

But the talking phase provides no security, today you’re the only one he’s talking to, tomorrow, you’re not the guy she calls first in the morning anymore.

When will we want more? Ask for more.

Do more.

And ultimately be more.

I am never here to scapegoat anyone and I am not perfect (this is a lesson for me too).

But we need to grow as a people.

For a generation so adept at knowing emotions, we are very emotionally behind.

Our emotional vocabulary is shot. Minimal if any.

Men cannot communicate needs and women cannot fully grasp the understanding of self.

People talk more than they get into relationships. This is our new wave of attraction. Our new ways of sharing self.

We talk and talk but our hearts are not listening. All we do is talk; no action.

Till Forever Runs Out by Alex Vargas

My insides were turning.

My fingers were twitching.

I wanted to punch something. I wanted to scream at the same time.

It made no sense.

How could she?

How could they?

All these years and I just walked around blindly.

I kept pacing in my room while Janet and

“Baby, where are you going?”

I turned and glared at her. I kept quiet as I continued to stuff clothes into the bag.

“Andy, can you at least tell me where you are going with our daughter?”

I turned towards her and yelled

“Our daughter?!

Are you serious?!”

I turned away and then turned back around in anger and said

“You may have birth her but you are not a mother to her!

That is my child and you are not deserving to be called her mother!. So back the fuck off”

She began to cry profusely.

I walked out of the room and into Ruby’s room and packed some of her clothes.

“Andy, please don’t do this?”

she begged as I grabbed my coat and walked out.

I stopped by my car and said

“She is going to be safe with me, so don’t you dare call the police”

I got into the car and I began to back out of the driveway when my phone began to ring. I looked down and it was Ruby’s school.

“Hey Andy, it’s Leslie from the front office. There is a man here claiming he has permission to pick up Ruby?

His name is not on the list though. Did you authorize this?”

The voice travelled into my ears.

“No I didn’t. Do not let him anywhere near my daughter. I will be there shortly”

….

Anthony was standing in front of the school office when I pulled up. I parked in the handicap-marked space and turned on my hazard lights.

I jumped out of the car and made my way into the office

“Andrew, you know she’s mine just give her up”

My brother said to me. I came up close and got in his face

“I swear Anthony, if it weren’t for the fact that we are at a school right now with kids here. I would beat the shit out of you.

And let’s even assume she’s your daughter on the slightest possibility, it took you 7yrs to step forward????

No Anthony! Fuck you!”

I walked into the office and greeted the people in the office. Leslie was a friend I had made from the PTA meetings. I signed out Ruby on the sign out sheet and I turned around as Anthony said

“Don’t let this get ugly for her sake.”

I again approached him and said in a very quiet voice

“This only gets ugly if you stay involved. Just leave and leave us alone”

I turned around and said to Leslie

“Can you please have the security escort him out of here”

They called the security crew over the walkie talkie and a few minutes later he was being led off the school premises

“Andrew, you can have them kick me out but you know that girl is mine!

Stop holding on to what ain’t yours baby bro! Give her up to her real daddy”

Anthony yelled loud enough for all to hear as he was taken outside the gates.

Those words were hard to hear but Ruby was mine to protect and until I figured out what was really going on, she was staying closest to me.

…..

Ruby and I walked to the car and I strapped her into her car seat. I could sense that she was nervous and trying to understand what was going on.

We set out and I drove past the house.

From the back seat, I heard Ruby ask

“Daddy, you passed the house. Where are we going?”

I looked back using the rear view mirror and said to her

“Yes baby.

We are going somewhere else for a little while”

She seemed a bit confused but not hesitant to the idea.

She was quiet for a few minutes as I continued onto the freeway and then she asked

“Daddy is mummy going to meet up there?”

I paused and took a deep breath as I replied

“Soon baby”

I pulled out my phone and called Tanya.

She didn’t pick up the first time and I was feeling frustrated but I dialed again and she answered.

“Is Ruby with you right now?”

she asked

“Uhm..”

I responded affirmatively without saying words. She asked me

“Are you going to the cabin?”

“Yup”

I replied.

I had texted her some of the details of the developments but she still asked some question. Some I answered without words and some I couldn’t answer.

She knew where I was going and that I would be safe.

…..

 That cabin.

That was where this roller-coaster ride started and ended.

9 years prior was when I met Tanya. A mutual friend who thought she would be a good fit for a spread we were trying to put in the school magazine for the Engineering Club had introduced her to me.

We hit it off instantly.

She was beautiful, talented, funny and most importantly; she was from Saudi Arabia.

Her family had moved here when her older sister was born. They had her here and gave her and American name to facilitate the full experience of growing up in the states.

The piece we were working on was documenting America’s intrusion into Saudi Arabia’s oil market. We wanted a female model to highlight the part of the article that covered women being forced to take care of households more.

Tanya made it on the cover and also into my heart.

We fell in love quick. And I was sure that I was going to marry her.

I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.

Things were going smoothly, she got me and well, I appreciated her. Since men will never understand women.

The night we made it official was at the cabin.
My mother had given us permission to throw an end of the school year party with a catering service.

My friends and I drove up there for the weekend.

A bit to drink here, some weed there, pills from anywhere and we were lit.

The night was going well and I was making my rounds and saying hi when I made it up to the study upstairs.

I walked into the study and there was a startled Tanya, reading an encyclopedia.

She was curious to find out things about my family.

My father had died when I was 4.

I hardly knew the man and my mother raised us. My brother and I were everything she dedicated her life to.

She drove us to every practice, every sleepover, baked every kind of cookies and helped produce all our school plays.

Our mother was our rock.

But she was fierce with her job also. She was one of the top lobbyists for the Planned Parenthood organization and was rising to the top quickly.

She took no nonsense from anyone and always spoke her mind.

The best way to describe her was to say that if we were to every get arrested, our only call would be to her. Not because she was our mother but because we knew she was better than any lawyer.

I walked up to Tanya and placed my hand on her lower back as I pulled her close.
We were almost nose to nose when I said

“So we’ve been doing this for a while now. How do you feel about making this official?”

I paused and continued

“Would you be my girlfriend?”

I smiled as she began to smile and she said

“Yes Andy”

The words barely left her mouth as I began to kiss her.

Hard.

Her lips were soft.

The oils she used in her hair warmed my senses.
Her skin felt cold but that might have been the heat coming through my palms as my hands caressed her body.

I lifted her and placed her on the desk.

Spreading her legs, I stood between her as she wrapped her legs around my thighs. I began to kiss down her neck as closed her eyes and moaned quietly.

I began to unbutton her blouse as I ran my hands downwards.

Cupping her breasts, I squeezed gently and she responded with moans that tingled my ears.

I lifted her skirt up as she began to unbuckle my belt.

On my knees I dropped as I began to kiss my way down her navel.

I reached my destination as I prepared to have my lips make love to her lower lips. I pulled her panties down and smiled as she lifted her legs ready to place them on my shoulders.

I licked my lips and lowered my head as I kissed her pick.

Wet.

Hot.

Sweet.

They kissed me back. I began to work my tongue around as my lips became soaked in her wetness. She dug her nails into the back of my head.

I twisted my neck as my tongue worked when the door flung open!

Standing there was Chad, my best friend.

“Yo! There is a fire in the basement bro!”

Tanya was embarrassed and had tried to jump off me and I was getting up as I said

“You couldn’t handle it bro?!

Damn man!”

I pulled my pants up from my ankles as I turned to Tanya and said

“I’m sorry baby. I’ll be back”

I kissed her as she wiped her juices off my chin and said

“Go. I’ll be here trying to find my dignity when you return”

I smiled at her joke and dashed out.

Another friend of mine who had gotten too drunk and dropped his blunt in the wrong place started the fire in the basement.

I put out the flames with the extinguisher but another set of flames were also going to burn out.

 ……

I was crushed when Tanya told me she was going back to Saudi Arabia indefinitely after graduation because he parents were planning her wedding for her.
An arranged marriage

I was devastated.

But her family wanted her to continue the family tradition of arranged marriages.

We had been seeing each other for over a year, and I was preparing to bring her home after graduation that this was the woman I wanted to get married to.

Everything fell apart after she left.

Time difference.

Distance.

Another guy in the picture in her life and family pressures; we slowly drifted apart.

As much as we tried to fight, it didn’t work.

My mother was in the process of making a push for CEO

Tanya had been gone for about 6months at the time I came up to my mother.

The time Janet had gotten pregnant.

Janet and I had been involved and even though we only had unprotected sex once, all it takes is one time.

I was raised to take responsibility for my actions, so I had to man up and get ready to be father.

I had been planning to let my mother know that I was in love with Tanya and wanted her when the Janet situation developed.

I took it as fate that I wasn’t meant to end up with Tanya.

I remember calling Tanya to inform her that I had gotten someone pregnant.

That call was one of the hardest of my life.

I could hear the disappointment in her voice.

I remember her asking me if I was sure and I said yes.

I didn’t hear from Tanya again until after Ruby’s first birthday.

I tried to understand why my mother didn’t try to fight me marrying Janet. Accepting a child is one thing, but because you impregnate a girl doesn’t mean you have to marry her.

My aunt had explained it to me that, my mother being the CEO of Planned Parenthood could not be caught in a scandal where her son, had unprotected sex but more importantly turned down the mother.

I was stuck.

Janet was cool and we were young.

So why not?

I was of the impression that it would all even out and we would be okay.

I never forgot about Tanya and it was very clear to Janet and I that even though we were good parents, we were not in love.

When Tanya came back into my life, she never explained the year long absence but I was just glad to have her back.

She had convinced her family to let her leave the marriage because her husband was abusive and tried to rape her.

She took up the airline job because she never wanted to be caught on the ground.

Always moving from city to city.

Tanya and I began seeing each other after Janet and I agreed that we could explore other love interests but our agreement was “no more kids and we would wait till Ruby was 11 to officially separate”

I was going to be with Tanya and she knew this while she was free to do as she pleased.

But here we were.

I guess I was breaking the agreement because I was not going to stay with her any longer.

I was done.

 …….

I was preparing dinner around 6pm when Ruby walked out of her room. I could hear her little footsteps on the floor of cabin house.

She walked into the kitchen and said

“Daddy”

I turned around and faced her as I turned the penne pasta in the saucepan

“Yes love”

I smiled at her

She looked up at me sad and I turned the heat down on the cooker

I dropped to my knees and said

“Whats wrong baby?”

She bowed her head down and said

“I miss mommy”

I felt it.

The reality of what life would be like having to raise her without her mother briefly hit me.

“Mummy is working love and she’ll be here soon”

She seemed like she didn’t believe me as I kissed her forehead.

“Baby sit down, so we can eat.”

As we ate, Ruby asked me

“Daddy, are you still taking me to Sophie’s birthday party tomorrow?”

I had forgotten about that and here we were almost 3 hours away from home.

I nodded and lied

“Yes love”

We were eating away when I heard a knock at the door.

Ruby and I looked at each other. I told her to stay put while I went to check the door.

I looked through the peephole and there she was.

Sigh.

How did she know I was here?

…..

“How did you know we were here?”

I asked

She patted my cheek and said

“Child don’t play. You are my son and you go where you can think the clearest in crisis.

We need to talk but first, where is my granddaughter”

She placed her coat and purse on the seat closest to the door as she headed into the dining area.

She knew I wasn’t going to confront her about of that in front of Ruby. She asked me to serve her a plate as she said

“Your brother and Janet are in the car”

I stared at her and said

“What?!

You brought them here!

Why???”

She glared at me as she said

“Don’t you raise your voice at me. You know better than that.

We all have things to iron out and they came to me, so here we are”

I was furious.

Why would she even entertain their side????

I could hear them walk into the house as Ruby ran and hugged her mother.

“Daddy, mummy is here!”

Ruby shouted from the living room.

I came into the living room and Anthony was seating on the couch looking as arrogant as ever.

Janet was locked in a hug with Ruby and my mother was pouring herself a glass on wine from the bar.

Anthony smiled at me with that evil smile he taunted me with all our lives growing up. I just wanted to beat him up.

Janet came up to me and said

“Can I talk to you in private please?”

I agreed as everyone was watching me. Janet and I walked into the other room. I said

“What could you possibly want to say to me Janet?”

She actually seemed apologetic as she said

“I just want you to know that I’m sorry and I never meant to hurt you.

I don’t expect you to forgive me but all I want is the best for Ruby.

I jut hope you…”

The doorbell rang.

I cut the conversation short as I walked into the living room. Anthony was standing by the bar now and my mother was by the door getting ready to open it when she said

“Are you expecting anyone?”

I said no.

She opened the door and standing in the doorway was Tanya.

Tanya said with a smile on her

“Evening Mrs David, long time”

My mother said to Tanya

“What are you doing here?”

Tanya with as direct as I have ever seen her, looked straight at my mother and said

“You know exactly why I am here”

I was shocked but I said comment below and look out for Part 4 next week. Thanks!

I pulled up my pants and buckled my belt. I sat down on the chair as I put on my shoes.

I turned around and she was awake. I smiled at her and she smiled back.

She asked me

“Do you really have to go?”

I laughed as I replied

“If I don’t to work, you’d be holding up the rest of the country”

She understood but I had to remind her about it every time we spent time together.

“When will I see you next?”

I responded

“Soon, I hope.”

I straightened my tie in the mirror. And she said

“You know I’ve always loved you in your getup”

I turned and joked

“You’re only saying that cos you don’t want me to leave”

She smiled and said

“Can you blame me?”

I shook my head and climbed into the bed to give her a kiss. She pulled me by my tie and locked her lips into mine.

Her tongue invaded the space in my mouth.

I eventually pulled away and said

“Cindy, you’re going to make me late”

She smiled and said

“It won’t be there first time”

She sat up and said

“Just a quickie?”

I sighed.

….

About 15 minutes later, I walked into the lobby of her apartment complex.

My Uber driver had been waiting for me.

I got into the car and apologized for being late.

The ride to work was smooth, as I had beaten the morning traffic.

I arrived at work about 30 minutes later.

I thanked the driver as I departed.

It was from door to door. Like a robot, I could navigate my job site in my sleep.

I was walking through the last security clearance when one of the employees said,

“Where are you headed today?”

I responded with a smile as I said

“Hopefully no where too far”

I walked into the conference and my colleagues were seated around the table.

The briefing allowed me to check into a new place.

My mind began to travel and then I heard one of the supervisors say

“You with us?”

I nodded.

I really wasn’t there. I would always get nervous like this before I had to work.

We left the room and headed to our posts.

The boarding began and shortly, I was sitting and ready to work.

The crew finished their run through and came to inform us.

I picked up the microphone and said

“Ladies and gentlemen this is your captain speaking we like to welcome you onboard this Virgin America flight 294 to Miami, Florida. Flight duration is around 2:58 minutes and we are expecting a fairly smooth flight today. Once again we thank you for choosing to fly with us today and we hope you enjoy your flight”

The takeoff was fairly smooth and once we leveled in the air. I took off my headphones and I thought to myself.

I was very grateful for my life.

29 and doing the job I loved. The work I had put in to getting here had all paid off.
My happiness was completely in my control and I was balancing all my responsibilities as needed.

I had actually followed my dreams to get to the place that I was. Dedicated myself to my journey and my struggle, I finally pulled through.

But there was more I wanted in life. More I had to attain.

It was never enough. I always wanted more.

……

For the career, I had selected, you would think that I would have handled landings better but I hated them.

I loved being high up though. I somehow felt like being up in the sky lifted me above my problems. It didn’t always go that way though.

My problems like landings always made my brain move within my head.

And then came the nausea.

Derek, my co pilot landed the plane. The crew finished letting everyone out and then we left the plane.

The shuttle was waiting for us as we stepped off the plane. In we went as I quickly ran through my emails and messages that came through while I was in the air.

I plugged my headphones into my ears and turned on one of my favorite songs “Nina Simone: Be My Husband”.

The bus peeled out of the airport. It was a short ride to the hotel as we all got out and filed our way into the lobby.

The check in process was smooth and within minutes, I was sitting on the edge of my bed taking my shoes off. I placed my phone of the bedside table and returned to take my shoes off. My phone buzzed with the incoming message

It flashed across the screen as it read

“I’m guessing you got there safely. Well, just wanted to check in.

Stay safe”

I turned away as I threw my pair of socks onto my shoes sitting at the base of the bed. I wriggled my toes as they were finally set free from hours of being trapped.
I picked up the remote control and turned on the television and skipped through the channels till I ended up on Sportscenter.

The highlights were on as I stretched out in bed and pulled the covers up over my feet.

A yawn and my eyes became heavy.

Sleep.

……

I was awoken by a gentle series of knocks on the door. I sluggishly lifted myself of the and walked to the door as another series of knocks ended. I looked through the peephole and smiled big.

She was here.

I looked down and fixed my shorts as I opened the door.

There she was gazing beautifully as her amazing smile lit up the doorway.

I was about to say hello when she placed her index finger on my lip and pushed me back into the room. She closed the door behind her and continued to lead me into the room as I travelled backwards.

I arrived on by the bed and then she stopped with pushing down. She leaned in and gave me a kiss.

Then she turned me and pushed me onto the desk chair.

I was looking up at her now as I noticed her in her heels and flowing pee coat. She opened her coat and flashed her toned body as she ran her hand over her navel.

She smiled again and dropped down into a squatting position. Her red Temptation pumps giving her extra height as she pulled down my shorts.

My throbbing member was waiting for an escape and gladdened the opportunity to appear. She kissed the head as her tongue licked it slowly.

The sucks started off slow and soft with her perfect lips giving home to my wanting member.

Her mouth was getting wetter as she attempted to fit it all in her mouth.

She was slurping from top to the base.

Her long occasional strokes on my balls left me wandering if she could actually hear me moaning. I was trying to contain myself but I could feel pleasure travelling into my toes.

The sensation heated up my tailbone but I continued to muffle my moans.

She placed her fingers on her clit and began working her fingers on it. The combination of her sucking and moaning was now driving me insane.

I tried to push her off but she held firm.

She took one more full stroke in and licked balls before I snapped my legs up and pushed her up.

She smiled as she stood up. She licked her lips as she turned around and walked to the bed and then said

“At least I know you still can’t handle the heat on your balls”

She dropped her coat and climbed onto the bed with her heels on. On her fours she arched her back low and said

“Now come and show me how much you’ve missed me”

I removed my shirt and came up behind her. I smiled and licked my lips in preparation for the feast. She already grabbed the sheets tightly in anticipation. I stroked my beard as I climbed up into the bed behind her.

Holding her cheeks wide, I took one long stroke from bottom to top.

Wet.

Really wet.

It reminded me of Winnie The Pooh trying to lick his honey from a jar in the cartoons.

It was warm and tasted amazing.

My strokes with my tongue were long and pressed on her clit. She began to moan as my tongue explored her wetness. It just wouldn’t stop.

And I wasn’t going to waste any of it.

I spread her pink with my tongue and I slid it deeper and continued to suck all her juices.

I began to nibble on her clit with speed. Alternating between long strokes and a buzzing speed on her clit, I worked it.
Her moans continued to be my form of affirmation and navigation as I prepared my member in waiting to join the party.

I rose up and prepared to slide into her. She looked back at me with that wanting look in her eyes.

It was tight.

Soaked.

Warm.

Each thrust was met with a moan. Each one louder than the last one, she gripped the sheets like her life depended on it.

The pace picked up as I thrust deeper, she threw it back at me.

Then her wild side kicked in, she said

“Geez! Why are you doing this? “

in that pleading tone. It only caused me to pound harder.

She began yelling

“Fuck you! Fuck you!”

I continued to thrust harder. My balls slamming into her wet clit as she begged

“Fuck me… Fuck meee harder…”

“You know you want to fuck me harder… you know you’ve been wanting this pussy….

Pull my hair…”

I grabbed a handful of her hair with my left and each thrust was hard.

Pounding hard.

My throbbing member searched the depths of her. Touching the walls as the walls of her pink gripped my hard member

She moaned

“Grab my waist and fuck the shit out me.

Spread them wider”

Her words were an added stimulus for me as I tried to contain myself without exploding. I couldn’t keep up for long.

A few more hard thrusts and I was grunting as my seed escaped their coven.

Right next to her, I slumped.

Both of us were covered in sweat and panting for air. I pulled her closer and kissed her forehead. She kicked off her shoes and wrapped her legs around mine and said

“I guess you really missed me”

I looked down at her beautiful face and the sly smile that covered it

And said

“I guess I did”

It was silent for a bit as we both caught our breath and then she said

“When was the last time you had it like that?”

I frowned without looking at her and said

“Too long”

……

Buzz… Buzz… Buzzz….

I heard my name as I opened my eyes. It was Tanya waking me up

“Your phone has been going off”

I looked at her confused and then looked at my phone. It was my wife.

I clicked to answer it and before I said anything, she said

“Andy, your daughter is refusing to go to school today. Fix it cos I’m running late for work”

I sighed and I was now fully aware of where I was and what I was doing

“Janet, did you try asking her why?”

She scoffed and said

“of course I have but she’s like you and won’t talk. Here she is, talk to her”

She handed the phone over to her my daughter Ruby.

“Hey baby, it’s daddy”

I said

“Daddy, I don’t want to go to school today. I don’t like my dress and mummy didn’t buy the cupcakes and my whole class is bringing stuff”

she responded in her soft voice and I said

“Don’t worry baby, mummy will get you some cupcakes and remember that blue dress daddy bought you last month?

Will you wear that to school today?

You look really pretty in it and then we can go for ice cream when daddy gets back okay?”

She instantly replied

“Okay daddy”

“Okay my love. Give the phone to mummy”

I heard her walking and then Janet was back on

“She ready to go now?”

Janet asked

I replied

“Stop at Safeway and pickup 12 cup cakes for her class. Give her the blue dress I bought last month and you’re good to go.”

She chimed back

“Sure.

Anything else?

And when are you coming home?”

I sighed and replied

“Tomorrow night.

Get her to school on time. They do circle first thing in the morning”

I ended the call and dropped my phone Tanya came up behind me and pressed her cold breasts on my back and said

“Everything okay?”

I nodded and then she said

“You know that was supposed to be me?”

I turned to my left side and kissed her as I said

“I know love. I know”

Yours (CoverSeason) by La Braya

When I wailed

You toiled away

This is not your fault

But now he beats on me

And I want to run

But I remember the words you spoke

Now matter the feelings it evokes

Your home is your home

I’m applying a bit more

To cover up my scars

Bruises and deep scars

I kept in giving it one more try

Staying strong

I wouldn’t cry

But you where nowhere to hold my

….

Who knew I was meant to text her when she got home

I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to enjoy being alone

That I am meant to appreciate her more than her giving me some

Now I’m in love

But telling her is not an option

So I’ll select none of the above

Let me continue to hide behind my pride

Taking my failures in stride

But never really learning anything

I was told that I was allowed to leave after 15 minutes

If the professor didn’t show

It’s been 15years

I have waited so long

My chest hairs began to grow

….

I would FaceTime

Yet you would text back

Returning home with a heavy heart

I just wanted you to whisper in your deep voice

Comfort sounds

Truly capturing me in the love I thought we shared

But hours would pass

Nights would count on

And we continued to grow apart

This was not what we wanted from the

….

I appreciate you

Always being there

Even when you’re not here

Our friendship has grown

You are my best

It was such a great ride

You became the first

In my heart

In my thoughts

With you I was secure

And then suddenly you told me you wanted more

And over time you would still come over

But you were gone

….

I just can’t seem to stay

When it gets tough

I run

Because I believe I have no one

I heard of your legend

But daddy I needed your presence

I am supposed to raise a son

But I keep waiting for you to drop out the sky

From behind the sun

But I have continued to realize

The longer I wait

The more I get burned

So I’m going inside where I think it’s safe

At least in there I can’t get hurt

Out here that’s not the case

You cannot protect me out here

You haven’t really protected me anywhere

Many of us are fostered by the world today.

My condolences to those who have lost parents. I pray you find peace and they rest in peace.

I wrote this piece a few weeks ago but in light of thinking about how many of us are raised by the “system”

I work very closely with foster families and I see what the lives of these kids look like.

Recently I said “fall in love with condoms you cannot fall in love with your kids”.

You might not catch the direct meaning of that statement but the truth is many of were not raised by our parents. They were “absent ” one way or another.

Some were physically present but emotionally unavailable. There are some today who grew up in the same households with their parents but have no relationship.

This is not to say that the parents are horrible people. I am just of the opinion that if you decide to bring children into the world. It is your duty to be everything and more for them.

I was raised by my grandparents for the most part, my parents in the States working to give us the best education and such but there are certain lessons that you can truly only get from a relationship with a parent.

My relationships with my father and mother are phenomenal today but I count myself lucky.

There are some who never get the chance to learn from their guardians.

I have seen many broken relationships and derailed lives because they do not know a way of being. One of the most important things with children is being able to model things to them.

When no one is there to model, who do you learn from?

Where do you learn to follow through, patience, growth, importance of hardwork and where do you get a first hands on look at love?

There are men out there today that cannot love today because they never saw their father show love to their mothers. There are women who cannot seem to be grounded because they had unstable mothers.

Now people boyfriends and girlfriends are doubling as the parents they never had.

We see it on Twitter and IG everyday, the society is “raising” a lot of people. And it shouldn’t be that way. From lessons on etiquette to lessons on love, social media and society are now the tutors.

I always ask you to ask yourself how you’re doing. Today, I challenge you to be there for someone. Even if no one was present for you.

Start to think about your life and future. Work toward being physically present and also emotionally sound for those that love you.

You don’t want the world teaching your child or friend, how to be become themselves.

Choose to be present.

Youth by Dee Faisal

Tiffany,

Today the world stops to acknowledge love

But I take a moment to thank God above

It’s you

He reached down and blessed me with you

My love for you is true

And I can’t imagine happiness without you

I can’t promise you there won’t be lows

But I can promise you that we’ll never be alone

I’ll always be your support

Completing your every thought

Fulfilling all your wants

Pushing you to dream for more

With you

I will never be gone

Your ruling in my life

I will always lead you back to it

Back to your throne

You are my Queen

Happy Valentine’s Day my love

Tony.

 2:14am

My mind was troubled by the emptiness. I just lay there in the dark room.

A few rays of light sneaking into the room from the right side of the space.

I was lying on my side of the bed with my back to the window.

I would occasionally drift towards sleep but it was too dark on the other side.

I worried about where my mind would go if I closed my eyes. The memories my brain would tap into. I wasn’t ready and I didn’t know when I would be.

Silence.

I could hear myself breathing as the night continued it’s daily appearance and reminder of my emptiness.

It was a bit colder that night. It was 3 days after Tony has left me.
Broken promises he made to me.

He had promised me that I would never feel this.
Again.

He looked into my eyes and told me that he would never leave. He would be there to protect me.

He promised.

I found myself conflicted between feeling sadness and emptiness to addressing feelings of anger.

I sometimes became mad at him because he was perfect.

He was by far the best I ever had. In many ways than one, he completed me.

And it had taken me so long to find someone like him.

Someone that truly understood me without reservations

He truly took on my baggage and the extra I came with and did not charge me for any of it.

There was no fairytale love story about how we met, or whether I put him on this wild goose chase that most women put men on.

Our first interaction was very simple and direct.

I had just gotten out of a horribly draining relationship and earlier that night, I had sworn off men.

I was sitting in bed at my friend’s apartment when I had been watching classic movies and eating beef patties.

I was just fattening myself up. I couldn’t understand why the guy I had just broken up with, was such an asshole.

Cheating on me and then somehow trying to make it my fault?

After I gave him everything???

Selfish!

I made a plan to become more selfish and focus more on growing myself.

I was so done with men.

I was saying things like

 “all men are the same.”

“They are all dogs”

“I will never open my heart to another man”

“I’m just going to be cold from now on”

 Classic.

I was in my anti men state when my friend Laura walked into her apartment.

She stopped in the doorway and just stared at me.

No words.

Just staring.

Slowly smiles covered both our faces and she said

 “Get up! We’re going out”

she shut  the door with the back of her right leg and placed her handbag on the floor.

I replied with a full mouth as I slid under the covers

 “Nooo… I’m not”

She was now standing by the island in the kitchen. She was pouring herself a glass of wine.

She downed the glass in one go and said

“When I left this morning, you were laying right there.

And I’m pretty sure you haven’t even moved since I left; unless to get food because you love food too much.

We are going out tonight! I have had a day and we need to let loose. I am calling Jessica too”

Jessica was the life of the party and she for sure was not going to let me stay home. I picked myself and ran out of the living room in my sweats as Laura laughed at me.

The plan was to grab some drinks at a local bar before proceeding to this new club downtown.

We were all covered in our coats, with our skimpy dresses underneath; drinking away and laughing. I had scanned the room when we first walked in and I felt there were not many attractive men in the room. Besides, I didn’t need any nor did I think any would be able to match up to us.

Laura was the social activist and director of the largest homeless shelter in the area, Jessica even with her party ways was surprisingly a killer negotiator for big firms. Her team would get drafted in to broker mega deals but she partied like she was raised on the Jersey Shore.

I was the “modest” one; boring dentist. I love dentistry and a man with great teeth.

I remember joking that night before we left the house that a man with great teeth would probably be my undoing.

I was sipping out of my glass of wine and I can’t even remember what we were talking about when I heard a really deep voice behind me.

I turned to my right where he was standing and I looked up at him.

Such a good-looking man!

I tried to compose myself and before I could speak, he stretched out his hand and in that sexy bass ridden voice, he said

“My name is Tony. Nice to meet you.”

And then he did it. He flashed that beautiful smile!

I squeezed my legs together and swallowed hard before stretching out my hand to shake his.

Then he said

“Good evening ladies”

to Jessica and Laura. He shifted to the fourth chair and said

 “May I sit?”

I think we were all still in shock but I nodded and he sat down. His eyes were glued on me and I couldn’t help but continue smiling.

Remember that “I’m off men” speech I gave earlier, yeahhhh… It died.

I just wanted to kiss those perfect lips that guarded his amazing teeth and then run my fingers through his beard.

He smiled again and said while looking straight at me

“So I have 3 questions for you.

One, what’s your name? Are you single?

Two, do you like sushi and jazz and three, when can I pick you up?”

Now I was smiling too hard and I knew it but you couldn’t blame me. I was so surprised and turned on by his confidence.

I looked over to my friends on my left as if to say

“Is that guy serious?”

And they looked back with the expression on their faces saying

“Yes! And you better answer so he can take you out”

I turned back to him and said

“You know, you actually asked me four questions. Instead of three..

Soooo… you have to pick one to eliminate”

 He smiled and calmly said

 “No.

I want an answer to all 3 or 4”

I just couldn’t help it. The way he held his ground and had my friends gazing on the greatness of his beard, I gave in.

There was only a two-week break between my breakup and meeting Tony but I felt like it was so worth it.

As we left the bar that night and walked into the cold night, I noticed Tony didn’t have a coat on but it was really chilly out.

 “Aren’t you cold?”

I asked. He smiled and said

“Not really. I have my scarf and my car is literally right there”

pointing at a park BMW sitting curbside. The scarf was actually really nice and I said it out loud.

He replied

 “Do you want it?”

I smiled and before I could answer again, he took it off and placed it around my neck and said

 “It looks better on you.”

A hug, a goodbye to my friends and we began walking away in opposite directions. I kept turning back to look at him as he faded into the night.

We walked as Laura said

“What happened to staying away from all men?”

I smiled and sniffed his scarf that smelled heavenly and said

 “This one came to me”

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you! Love you to bits!

.       .      .       .       .       .

Mornings since Tony left brought forth feelings that seemed to conflict within my heart.

Everyday I woke up to the reminder of what I had lost but I would find comfort in my time at the cemetery where I could just cry and hold on to the memories he created with me.

My mother continued to ask me why I would not allow myself to be taken by someone else. Especially since it had been 5 years.

I had changed so much of my life but I still didn’t let go of Tony. I closed my private practice and took up teaching to be around kids.

I changed the layout of almost every room in the house except Tony’s side of the room.

I just couldn’t let go.

People just didn’t understand what Tony was to me. He literally was everything.

My thoughts began and ended with him.

And I was tired of having to answer to people. It was annoying like when the detectives came to talk to me right after Tony died.

Can you think of anyone that would have wanted to hurt your fian… Tony?”

I smiled as the detective corrected himself mid sentence. He must have been thrown off by the engagement ring I was wearing on my finger. I had fallen in love with the ring and begun wearing it.

“We apprehended a man named Carlos Riera a few blocks away from the crime scene.

Do you know this man?”

He looked up at me as he slid a picture of the man across the table. I looked up and shook my head to let them know I didn’t know the man.

I still couldn’t imagine anyone trying to hurt Tony.
He was that kind of man so questions like that annoyed me because I felt like they had no answer. And because I had to “help” the detectives, I had to pretend that there might even be the slightest possibility, that someone wanted my Tony dead.

Stupid.

.       .       .      .       .

With each year, the holidays became lonelier.

I was sitting on the bus a day before Valentine’s Day and all the radio was playing was love songs.

I was in hell because I had forgotten my headphones at home and had to listen to the entire lineup on the radio.  Everything was mushy and sweet.
But driving me up a wall as I imagined what Tony would have had planned.

He always had something elaborate planned out and almost every time, it was a surprise.

But I was resigned to just my imagination and clutching on to the old memories we had made.

I arrived at the school and made my way into my classroom like I always do and there was a bouquet of flowers sitting in a vase.

I actually smiled for a second while I read the note; it was from Michael.

Michael had been trying to be with me for almost a year. He worked as a management consultant for a Fortune 500 company and was travelling most of the year. In some ways, I felt that made it easier to ignore his advances.

We had gone out a few times so I didn’t seem rude but I just couldn’t give him all of me.

He was a great guy but nobody was Tony.

I placed the flowers on the side of the table and continued with my day.

It was extended recess and I was on recess duty. Teachers took turns in watching the kids on the playground.

I was walking around the yard when I arrived at a table filled with kids painting Valentine’s Day paintings for their parents.
Some of the pictures were actually really cute. I was watching the kids, focused as they tried to get the mixtures of colors right and ensuring the angles were properly colored in.

It was a joy to behold.

A boy from the end of the table called out

 “Teacher”

I looked up and headed over to the kid

 “What’s going on?”

 I asked

He looked up at me and said

“I ran out of green and I cannot finish coloring in my dad’s name”

“Aww… Let me see if there is some green on this side.”

I replied as I walked to the other side of the table. I ran my hand through two tubs of crayons before I found the right kind of green he needed. I returned and handed it to him.

He said

 “Thank you.”

I was about to turn away when he said

 “Teacher, you wanna see?”

Holding it up to me. I obliged with a smile.

It was a nice picture of the boy, his mother and father. I was about to hand it back to him when I looked at the corner of the picture and the name read

 “Albert Riera”

I looked at the boys face and thought,

 “It couldn’t be”

I sat down on the bench next to the kid and said

 “Albert?”

He looked up at me and I said

“This is a nice picture. Is this your family?”

He nodded. I smiled and said

“Aww.. you guys are going to have a nice Valentine’s Day?”

He bowed his head and shook it. Then he said

“My mummy is at work but my daddy is in jail.

But.. but… my aunty Lydia is coming to take me and my cousin Ricardo to see Spongebob tomorrow”

His smile was full. I was struggling to maintain sincerity as I said

“Awww… I’m sorry to hear about that. “

“Oh no! Don’t worry, my dad is coming home soon. My mommy told me”

 He chimed in.

I nodded in agreement and without prompting he continued

“Yeah.. my mommy said my dad had to go away because he got into a fight with someone. But he wont do it again so, and he told me it is not good to fight… so I don’t fight”

 “That’s good Albert.

Always listen to your parents”

I got up as the bell rang. As he was about to walk away, I asked

 “Albert, how old are you?”

“I’m am 7. I will be eight in July!”

He replied with a huge smile as he picked his painting and took off running back to class. I just stood there and stared into space.

I kept telling myself, it couldn’t be.

It just couldn’t.

Or could it?

Early that year, I had finished last in my class during the first term. Only because came late from America and joined them on the last day of October.
  2. I wear socks ALL THE TIME.
The easiest way for me to get sick is by catching a cold from either exposing my head or my feet. So I wear a pair of socks always and my beanie is never too far away from me.

Favorite Artist

M.I Abaga. The man doesn’t know it but his “Talk About It” album spoke to me. I admire him a great deal.

But I have close followers in Ed Sheeran (he is my brother btw, I don’t care what you think), Jordan Rakei, Nina Simone, Marvin Sapp and a very close last is a young kid on the block but with writing skills beyond his years; his name is Tay Aiwar.

Do you have fears?

Yes. Being seen as worthless or not good enough. Or the people I love giving up on me.

 Are your stories about you?

Nope! I write very little about myself. I might write about certain emotions in my life, fusing them in the story but almost all my stories are fictional.

I would go as far as saying that the breakdown of the stories is
25% real life elements and 75% created and fictional elements. Besides it is hard to write about myself, some people on here know my mother before they go and report me and I get grounded or have my computer taken away.

Have you ever been or are you in love?

Sigh. Yes and yes I am.

Why “#WhatTheHeckMan”?

Simple and short, my mother would never stand for me saying “WhatTheFuck”, What The Heck Man, is the musings of a young man navigating life and along the way, I get to points where I want to scream “What The Heck Man”.

I also love making you all say it at the end of a story when there is a cliffhanger.

The pictures u use in writing most of your series, do u just take them for that purpose, or you happen to take off guard sort of pictures and it ends up coming in handy for you when you start to put your words together?

I started taking my own pictures for my stories because my audience grew. I formerly used to just get pictures off Google but I began to worry about copyright issues. So I take my own pictures now. I take pictures all the time, most times for stories but sometimes, random pictures come in handy for stories; especially when I am too lazy or busy to go out and take new ones.

I also really love photography. The same way I want my stories to elicit emotions, I love watching pictures send a message and stir up whatever emotion. I hope this question leads to me getting a camera for my birthday. I want to take this photography thing to the next level.

What would you consider to be the biggest strengths of your personality?

Being able to connect with people over different things.

Last time you had sex?

It’s been a while. Help me fix it? Please.

Do you have a special woman in your life?

Yes na! She is kind, warming, loving, PRAYERFUL, HARDWORKING and she never burns my plantain. She’s my beautiful mother.

How do u get to convince whoever is ur photographer to take a pics of you in the slumpy areas?

I take 95% of my pictures by myself. Hard to believe, but true. Shout out to my trusty shoebox and soon my tripod. J

How do you joggle with work, writing and your M.Sc Program?

When you love something as much as I love writing and creating stories, it is easier to make time. But let me be very honest, I work 40+ hours a week, I write for another 10ish documenting my work and then school work is another full time job on it own. Lol

But I love bringing stories to you guys. I LOVE THE INTERACTION WITH YOU ALL. That’s why when people don’t comment, it truly gets to me It does.

I watch the views go up but the comments struggle to match up.
I READ EVERY COMMENT. I TAKE ALL YOUR FEEDBACK INTO ACCOUNT. It is one of the easiest ways for me to get better.

Some of you want a book from me but I need the complete confidence in my art and that comes from hearing it from you guys. You all the sample demographic, I am to write to. So if you all approve, I feel better about trusting my art with the whole world.
You are the fuel to have me share my work. You, yes YOU!

Are you as sexual as your stories are?

Even more but don’t loud it.

When did you discover your talent as far as writing and creating stories?

I would say I discovered it when I was 13. More or less, stumbled on it through heartbreak. But as far as creating stories, that came from constantly creating drama scripts for my youth groups. They came natural to me. Tell me the story line you wanted and I would come up with it in minutes.

They would always not choose my story first but eventually, it was mine they would still perform.
I could not contain the ideas I had again, so I started writing.

How do you feel about a woman making the first move?

Done right? Sexy AF!

When did it dawn on you that it isn’t something everyone possesses and what got you to just put pen to paper, or fingers to your keyboard whatever the case is and just write?

It still hasn’t dawned on me to be honest. I started writing out of frustration but I put my pen to paper because I realized that my words meant something to people; my family, girlfriends or just friends.

I saw my mother cry from a poem I wrote in 4 minutes and my girlfriend get soaking wet and horny from a short story I wrote while I was in the bathroom. I put my mind to writing when I noticed my own words could elicit emotions.

What are you getting your Masters in and what is your first degree about?

I am getting my MBA in International Marketing. My undergraduate degree was in Psychology.

 When will you marry……..me?

God’s appointed time. Lol. When he finally perfects your plantain frying abilities.

What inspires you?

I know it sounds cliché but EVERYTHING inspires me. I create stories from everything. Empty from a friend losing his aunt or the piece Homeless from my interaction with a homeless man. It can range from anything to anything lol.

I saw a pilot buying coffee at the airport today and I got a story line from that. Look out for that piece.

Pet peeve when it comes to your blog or readers?

PEOPLE THAT DO NOT COMMENT!!!! Especially Nnenna!

Like I can see you read it! Leave me flipping comment! Lol
Also people not sharing the pieces, tell people about them. Share the art.
People that favorite the tweets about the story on Twitter and don’t RETWEET the links.

No be everybody dey look your favorites!!!!

Can we have sex?

Maybe. But probably NOT.

Has your family ever read your blog?

Are you the devil?? No!!!!!! lol

3 things that inspire you the most

  1. Life
  2. Emotions I see
  3. My experiences

Your biggest role model

This is a cross between Pastor Adeboye and my father. I aspire to be humble like Pastor Adeboye and I look up to my father. Everyone that meets him loves him and he cares deeply about everyone. He went from being a millionaire to losing everything. Yet, he never changed or compromised his character or integrity for anything. I admire that.

Favourite author / book

The Adventures of The Old Wishing Chair by Enid Blyton

One of the first books etched in my memory. I read it as a kid.

I am sentimental. I know.

If you could meet anyone tomorrow, who would it be? Why? What would you do/say?

Every single one of you guys. I would host a party to finally meet all the people that carried me through 2014 without even really knowing it.

And all I would say is “Thank You” and then get mad at all of you that don’t consistently comment! Lol. Especially Nnenna!!!!

Are you a boob or butt guy?

I like butts. One in particular. Even when she’s mad at you, they’ll still talk back to you.

If you had one day to do and say whatever you wanted with no repercussions, what would you do?

I would ask for more days. Omo I can talk o! I would need more days but I would probably tell the truth about certain pains I have kept hidden all my life.

And call out some fake people.

How do you suggest I help given the circumstances. In hindsight on your own situation, what would you have loved for those in your life to do to help out more?

Never stop letting him know you love him. In whatever way possible. Small or big.

DO NOT MAKE IT ABOUT YOU AND HOW YOU WOULD FEEL.

Try to understand why he feels so hopeless and give him hope.
PRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have hoped people in my life, were somewhat more patient and they prayed more for me. God and only God gives peace.

He will calm the storm.

I know your passion for writing came from heart break, but what else motivates you to write?

My urge to build stories and push creative boundaries. Everything aids this.

 Ever been heartbroken?

 Self induced and afflicted.

What’s your favorite dish? (Doesn’t have to be Nigerian)

White rice and efo (stocked with smoked turkey, chicken bites, shrimp and gizzard, PLANTAIN, chicken and a can of Arizona iced tea (Kiwi Strawberry flavored).

I plan on eating cleaner in 2015 but my rice is not up for debate. Thank you and God bless you for coming!

What would you say is your sexiest asset?

My way with words.

Where are some places you hope to travel to in 2015?

Mexico, London, Dominican Republic and Nigeria. Might throw in another African country in there but we’ll see.

Woman Crush?

Sofia Vergara and Yemi Alade.

When did you move out of your parent’s home?

18.

When did you last feel proud of yourself?

 Returning from volunteering in Mexico.

Last impulsive thing you have done?

Flew in the love of my life. In under 24 hours.

Will you marry me? Lmbooo 😋😏

Yes! Wedding will feature Arbor Mist and Mongolian BBQ. Let’s do it now!

What can we expect from #WhatTheHeckMan in 2015?

Newness. A new approach.

2014 was a trying year for me personally. I have stories to tell you all!
But on the blog, more definition in pieces and obviously same consistent amazing content! J

There will be #WordsOfWednesday, where we navigate this life together. My poems to share my thoughts and views with you.
Titles of upcoming stories and previews for next parts maybe dropped on here.

The first Wednesday in the month will feature a video where I recap the story for the month before.

The #WhatTheHeckMan playlist will updated and constantly revamped. Share my musical taste with me.

There will be #WTHMAfterdark; randomly dropped but with that hastag. Well, I wanted to call them #WetWednesdays but we will say. Anyway, they will be short pieces to open the floodgates.

Our main showpiece #SanmiSaturdays will be everly present. More exciting stories to stimulate all sorts of feelings and new lessons for everyone to learn.

I want to grow my skills and I want to grow with you all. I want to make you laugh, cry, think, pray, forgive, work better, fight harder. I want my words to serve as a medium between fictional reality and tangible emotions. I always want you to “feel” something.

My wish in 2015, I REALLY WANT A WEB SERIES FOR #WhatTheHeckMan people. Pray for it and if you know anyone in the area that is interested.

Thank you all for being part of the “Behind The Writer” process with me. It opened my eyes to a lot!
