CdqSEhRVAAAH83m.jpg

Our family was a mess.

Somewhere deep in me, I couldn’t believe it.

I was disgusted and excited at the same time. The excitement I felt within my bones, caused me to be more disgusted with myself.

“How could this have happened?”

My sister and my father?

The man that raised us?!

You always hear that the world is a crazy place but you never truly understand how crazy till it passes right through your own home.

The next few months were weird to say the least.

I want to say there were separated because he wasn’t sleeping at home all the time.

And my sister kept the baby.

I was actually amazed to find out that my father publicly announced that he was the father.

My sister and her husband were finalizing their divorce.

He left and didn’t give her anything.

It wasn’t like she wanted it anyway.

But it shook the family to the core.

….

I sat down on the bed as the wear of the long day began to get to me.

I was tired.

My mind was racing at insane speeds.

I needed answers but I wasn’t even sure what answers I wanted first or even the questions I was meant to ask.

I just lay there, texting and reading emails. I remember thinking about what I wanted to eat for dinner and then thinking about making something for Cole.

I had been staying with him most days during the recent weeks as we had become much closer and officially dating.

I decided to make some lentil soup with a side of sweet potatoes.

One yawn and then I decided to take a quick nap. I think you can imagine how that went.

…..

I felt his arm around me as he tapped me to wake up.

“Babe, you’re not ready?”

I looked startled as he said

“We have dinner plans?…”

It made more sense and I realized I had forgotten about dinner plans. I immediately got up and started getting ready.

That evening as we finished dinner, we walked up the hill towards the car.

As we arrived at the traffic stop, I thought we were about to take a right turn. He placed his hand around my lower back and pointed to his left.

The man on the screen lit up as the system blurted out “Cross”

A few more blocks and we ended up in front of a Gentlemen’s club called Penthouse.

I turned to him and smile, he tipped the man at the door and we walked in.

In the lobby, the attendant greeted us and asked if he was there to make it rain on me.

He sheepishly smiled and said he was there to watch me have a great time.

He collected a stack of ones and we headed into the main area.

I just watched how his eyes followed me.

As we sat down and stripper after stripper came through, his eyes were still fixed on me.

Sometimes I would catch him staring and he still wouldn’t shirk the fact that he was staring.

Towards the end of our time there, one of the ladies came up to me and asked if I wanted a dance.

I glanced over to him and he paid.

Off she went. Boobs, ass, kisses and endless compliments. She fell in love with me.

He just fixed on me.

I could see his brain working creatively on how he was going to take me.

As we headed home, I could feel him driving faster than normal.

He couldn’t wait to get home.

As he drove, he placed his right hand on my thigh. I could feel the flood gates opening.

But my jumpsuit prevented him from going any further.

As arrived in the house, I went into the bathroom to take my make up off.

When I returned to the room, he had it lit up with candles.

Smooth jazz instrumentals played in the back ground.

He walked up to me and told me to close my eyes.

I reluctantly obliged.

He undressed me and led me to the bed.

Laying me on my back, I was trying to figure out what he was doing.

Then I felt the cold of metal on my wrist and a click.

“What are you doing?”

I asked.

“Shut up”

He replied.

Suddenly the same thing happened on the other hand.

It was clear that I was now handcuffed to the bed frame.

Hands dangling as my naked skin became home to his touch.

He asked me to open my eyes and there he was with that smile.

That almost evil look.

He knew what it did to me.

He leaned in and kissed me. His moist lips all over mine.

I felt a twitch in my spine.

As he kissed me, all I could think was I wanted him inside me like right now

I remembered how wet he got me and how I was dripping now.

He went down and kissed my pink.

His tongue played with my clit and teased the opening of my pussy.

My juices flowed and stained his mouth and beard.

He vibrated his tongue all over my clit and I tried to push him off but I obviously couldn’t.

He pinned my legs towards my chest from behind my knees. He was so strong.

He kept going and as I said “I’m going to cum”,

He stopped, uncuffed one hand. Turned me and grabbed my hair and thrust his dick into me fucking me hard as he could.

The way he pulled on my head turned me on but not as much as the way he choked me while he rammed his dick into me and his balls slapped my clit.

With each thrust, I could feel my wet drip onto his balls,

Every inch occupied by his able member.

I moaned louder  as he spanked my ass and talked dirty to me.

“Who’s pussy is it?”

I moaned and said

“Your’s baby. Yours!”

He grabbed my waist tighter and rammed his black package into me.

I went silent as I clutched the sheets.

It was like he was about to break me.

He leaned in, his grunts were sexy as he released his seed.

He slumped next to me.

I fell into the bed face down.

Seconds later, I turned to my right to look at him.

He was trying to catch his breath. I smiled and thought to myself

“He put in work.”

I looked up to the sky and smiled again.

A refreshing smile, if only my legs would stop shaking. 😊

A few minutes later, I turned over, worry across my face and placed my head on his chest as I asked

“Babe, do you think my family is dysfunctional?”

I looked up towards his face awaiting his answer. He leaned his head downwards and said

“No I don’t babe.

Every family has their own stuff. I wouldn’t call you dysfunctional.

I just think there is a lot going on for your family”

I smiled and then I said to him

“I’m glad you’re coming with me tomorrow”

He rubbed my head and kissed my forehead and said

“Me too baby”

…….

We set out at 4am.

A four and half hour drive to start the day as we made our way across the state.

I was nervous and praying as Cole drove us down.

I tried to distract myself with music and abstract thoughts. Nothing worked.

It felt like my first day of school, I just kept thinking of all the things that could go wrong.

We arrived and I sat in the car refusing to step out.

I just put my head down and started crying.

I realized that it was uncomfortable for Cole who reached out and came to my side of the car.

He squatted by the door and placed my hands in his.

He looked me in the eyes and said

“Babe, I know this is hard and scary but you have wanted this for years.

We have finally gotten close. You can’t give up now.

I am here with you and we can do this together. I will be here with you the entire way.

Okay baby?”

I sniffled as I wiped away my tears and said

“But… but… what if she doesn’t want me or even remember me?

What if she’s against a relationship with me?”

He rubbed my hand and said

“Babe, that won’t happen.

We’re just going to go in there and hope for the best. Thats all we can do and I will be right by your side”

His words comforted me. I wiped my tears and stepped out of the vehicle.

Into the open space, we walked in.

It almost felt like a walk through the yard in an episode of prison break.

We arrived at the check in window and the lady asked me for my name and purpose for visiting

“Hi, my name is Zuliha and I’m here to see my mother; Adele Roberts”

She looked at her computer as she said

“Drivers license, please?”

I reached into my wallet and removed my card which I handed to her.

She typed something in the computer for a bit and then, handing my drivers license back to me, she said

“I’m sorry but we do not have a patient by that name here”

I was surprised.

I said

“Excuse me?

I spoke to the manager last week before coming out here. What do you mean she’s not here?”

The lady perked up and said

“Ma’am, we have no patient by that name here.

I’m sorry but I can’t help you”

I began to get irritated.

“What do you mean?

Are you trying to tell me that I drove 4+ hours for someone thats not here?

After I called the manager and got all the details?

Can you at least check the system? There must be a mistake”

She looked at me and with a straight face and said

“We cannot disclose details of our patients to non family members”

I wanted to jump across the desk and punch her in the face.

I was stunned.

And then Cole said

“Can we get the supervisor or a manager?”

She smirked and said

“He is in a meeting right now but you are more than welcome to sit and wait for him”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Like what the heck man.

How did I drive this far and after all this searching to not find my mother.

Why couldn’t the universe just afford me one victory?

Cole and I walked to the seats and sat down

“Babe, whats going on?”

He looked at me as he tried to contain his surprise

“I’m not sure but we’ll figure it out.

Okay?”

I couldn’t contain myself.

How could I have gotten so close, only to be stopped at the last minute and what do they mean by she’s not here?

I was starting to twitch. And uncomfortable tick with my foot as I waited.

It must have been about 10 minutes and then the managers door flung open.

Out came the manager and my father.

I just sat there in shock.

Cole looked at me expecting a response but I was in shock.

He looked at me and said

“Hello Zuliha”

I couldn’t even muster a response.

He shook the hand of the manager and headed out of the door.

I looked over to Cole and he said

“What The Heck Man”

The manager gave us the same lie the receptionist lady gave.

I was so overwhelmed and I started crying.

I had gotten my hopes up so much and to have that taken away was so heartbreaking.

Sobbing, my face covered in tears and snot, I entered the car and as we were about to drive off, there was a tap on the car window.

I wiped my tears as Cole let the window.

The receptionist lady said

“Hi,

I’m so sorry about earlier. I was just trying to keep my job but I wasn’t lying when I said your mother was not here.

She was up until last night.

The overnight staff told me that she was drugged and moved to another facility.

My guess is that it has something to do with you coming today.

Here is the name of the facility they took her to.

If you are her daughter, you may need the help of the police but you may be able to see her that way.

Again, I’m sorry and good luck”

She finished and scurried away.

The shock on Cole’s face was everything that the situation was.

“Something weird is going on and I’m going to figure it out”

I said as I stepped out of the car and standing outside the car, my dad drove up and said

“Zuliha, let it go.

You have lived all your life without her. Why do you need to talk to her now?”

I walked up to his car and said

“I know you’re doing this because I exposed your secret but don’t worry, I will get to the bottom of this one too and the world will see you for the dirty and incompetent father you are.

You can count on that.”

I walked back into my car and said to Cole

“Drive”

I was going for revenge and the gloves were off now.

Anything and anyone could be collateral damage but I was going to get my answers, regardless of who I had to take down in the process.

Zuliha: Part 2
The Saga Continues

IMG_8606.jpeg

Cheating On Me by Kwabs

I continued walking around the house like I was carrying a secret.

Okay, a secret bigger than the one I was already carrying.

Well, my secret was already out.

But I didn’t feel liberated.

Now I felt like a pawn in an elaborate game, that could be sacrificed at anytime.

When I woke up the next morning, I laid in bed.

I just sat there and tried to understand what had happened before.

I replayed every word my sister had said and tried to fathom if it was true or not.

My heart raced as I replayed the words

“I want you to keep fucking my husband”

in my head.

How could she say that?

And how did she even know to begin with?

I needed answers.

As I walked out of my bed, I hoped my sister had already left the house.

When I entered the living area, it was empty.

A sigh of relief.

Entering the kitchen, I heard a gentle hum from the corner of the kitchen.

It was my sister making breakfast.

I walked in and opened the fridge without saying a word.

She stopped humming, turned and said

“Good morning Zuliha.

How did you sleep?”

With the door of the refrigerator still opened, I replied

“Good morning Irene”

She walked over to me, closed the door of the fridge and from less that a foot away from me, she looked me dead in the eyes and said

“Snap out of it.

I’m not asking you to kill anyone.

Just let things be as they were and we’ll all be fine

Okay?”

she was still standing that close to me when the kitchen door opened and her husband walked in

“Morning ladies”

he said with a smile as he headed for the coffee pot.

“What’s cooking?”

He threw in as he filled up his mug with a fresh brew of coffee.

Before anyone could answer, he walked up to Irene and held her from behind and whispered

“Last night was fun”

She smiled and he smiled.

“Eww guys”

I disgustingly chimed in as they held each other.

As I walked out of the kitchen, I couldn’t help but think, what was my sister playing at?

A divorce?

Power?

I was so confused and the tension was killing me.

I was going to find answers, one way or another.

…..

“So if I’m hearing you correctly, your sister found out that you have been sleeping with her husband and asked you to continue?”

I looked at her like I hadn’t just explained that and said

“Yes.

Exactly that”

She pulled off her glasses and leaned in

“So what does that bring up for you?”

she asked.

I paused for a second and then said

“I’m not entirely sure. I mean, I’m confused and somewhat nervous but I don’t really know.

Like…”

I sighed and leaned back in my reclining seat and then continued

“You know part of why I started coming to see you was to find myself. Since I found out that I was given up for adoption, I’ve been trying to find a place to anchor my life.

My sister and I have never been close.

Frankly, i think we have tolerated each other at best for years.

I think thats what made it easier to sleep with her husband really. We just don’t have a deep connection or maybe I’m just too messed up”

She scribbled in her notepad a bit and then asked

“So you believe that the absence of a connection with her, prevents you from caring about something like sleeping with her husband?”

“Yes and no”

I replied and then continued

“Do you know she was the one that told me I was adopted?

In the middle of an argument during my 18th birthday party… I can’t even remember what we were arguing about but I just recall that she yelled it out and all my friends heard it.

Now… moments like those are what contributed towards me hating her so much.

…I don’t even think I hate her, I just don’t feel anything towards her”

She didn’t write anything down this time around and she said

“So what do you want to do with it?

This entire situation….”

I sat up a bit and said

“I honestly don’t know. It’s just making me more vigilant.

I find that I am looking over my shoulder more because I don’t know what she’s up to.

I plan to find out soon enough though and then I can make my move”

she replied

“Okay.

Remember I am here if you need me”

I nodded and then I asked

“So what about the other stuff?

Any progress?”

She placed her notepad to the side of her seat and pulled out a folder from her purse.

Flipping through pages, she arrived at a list. She handed the list to me and said

“Those are the people we found nationwide with that name.

Because we don’t know her exact age or any other identifying information, the process might take longer as we narrow it down.

She’s in there somewhere, we just have to find her”

I smiled faintly and answered

“Thank you. I hope we do.

I’ve been searching for her all my life. Even when I didn’t know it”

I left her office still in an uncomfortable place but feeling a bit better.

As I got into my car, the radio turned on.

I don’t think there was a particular thing in my mind as I made my way home but I was suddenly washed with emotion.

I pulled over to the side of the road. Till the moment of writing this, I can’t pin point exactly why I was crying.

Maybe it was the fact that I was so close to figuring out who my mother was.

So many questions I wanted to ask, like

“why did you leave me?

Why couldn’t you love me enough to keep me?

Why didn’t you stop me from being tossed from home to home”

The tears just continued to flow without explanation.

I could feel my cries coming from depth within me. If there was ever a physical representation of my pain, it was in that space.

As I cried, it started to rain.

Minutes later, I heard a tap on the glass.

I couldn’t make out the face, so I clicked the auto lock button on the door and lowered the window a bit.

The man standing outside said

“Ma’am, are you alright?”

I realized I had been crying. I sniffled a bit and wiped my tears as I responded

“Yes. I just needed a moment”

It was a police officer.

He didn’t ask anymore questions, he just told me to take my time and be safe.

I waited a few minutes after he had driven off to leave.

Slow, driving home, I tried to gather myself for pulling into the driveway.

I sat in my car for about 15 minutes before I finally entered the house.

I headed into my room.

As I started taking my clothes off, I heard a gentle knock on the door.

It was Drey my sister’s husband.

I was only wearing my bra and my skirt.

He came up behind me and put his arms around me.

He leaned in to kiss me on my neck. I pushed him away and said

“I’m not in the mood”

He looked puzzled and outstretched his hands as he said

“What do you mean you’re not in the mood?

….Did I do something?”

I rolled my eyes and replied

“No but I’m just not in the mood”

He started to tease me and make jokes in an attempt to use humor to get what he wanted.

I wouldn’t budge.

He came very close and started tickling me.

I snapped and said

“I said I’m not in the mood!”

That one really got to him.

He stepped back and without saying a word, he walked out of the room.

I immediately feel horrible for going off on him but he wasn’t listening to me, so I let it pass.

…..

That entire evening, I never left my room.

I just watched shows and cycled through social media platforms all evening.

As I approached sleep, I suddenly heard loud arguing noises.

“Fuck you Drey!

….YOU have been wanting this baby but we agreed to wait 5years…

So what is the fucking rush now”

my sister yelled at her husband at the top of her voice.

I got off my bed and put clothes on and I started making my way out of the room.

I could hear them arguing and pacing.

He yelled back in a lower tone than hers

“Well, I want kids now! is that so bad???”

I opened my room door and entered the hallway when I heard her reply

“I am not keeping this baby and there is nothing you can make me do!

It’s my fucking body!”

He yelled back

“Can you even hear yourself???

You are my wife!

How can you be even talking about an abortion while we are married with no children??!

Are you mad??”

He looked so angry as I entered the living room and said

“What’s going on guys?

What happened?”

He turned and said

“Zuliha, stay out of it!”

I knew a bit of it was because I had turned him down earlier.

He was obviously still upset.

“I dont want to be part of it but when you are both yelling at each other, I just want to make sure everyone is safe”

He looked at me and said

“So we can’t have an argument as a couple in our own home???!”

I could tell he was at his limit.

My sister immediately jumped in and snarled back

“So now, my sister is making you uncomfortable in our home?

..because I won’t keep a baby. I don’t think we are ready for???”

I was shocked at how fast she jumped in to defend me but I turned to him and he said

“Just leave it alone!”

Irene looked at him and threw her hands up as she said

“You know what, I can’t do this.

I need space.”

She stormed out of the house, I presumed into the yard since she didn’t grab her keys.

Drey and I stood in silence for a second and then I walked up close to him and said

“So you think it is okay to yell at me because I refused to give you pussy?

So mature”

He hissed and snatched his car keys off the dining table and stormed out of the house.

A few moments later, I heard his car peel out of the driveway and into the night.

I sighed and headed outside.

Right on the doorstep, my sister Irene was sitting; crying.

For as much as I didn’t always feel for her, I felt bad for her.

I sat next to her and placed my hand on her back and gently rubbed it.

“Sis, whats going on?

You should be happy about this baby. Why are you so bent on not keeping it?”

She started sobbing even more and managed to mutter, you won’t understand.

I was surprised she thought I wouldn’t get it but I continued.

“Okay, tell me, maybe I can help and talk to him”

She hid her face in her palms and said

“No!

I don’t want you to talk to him”

“Okay but what is going on though, why are you crying so much?”

I inquired.

She turned her head towards me and said amidst a flood of tears

“The baby is not his”

I must admit, that caught me off guard.

It took me a minute to re-gather myself and then I asked the dreaded question.

“Okay, who’s is it?”

She sobbed even more.

For minutes, she just cried and said nothing. It seemed like it was so hard for her to bring herself to speak.

I patted her back and said

“It’s okay sis.

You can trust me”

I gave her a moment and then asked again

“Who’s baby is it?’

She looked at me and with a call for help she replied

“Daddy’s”

Her 3

Her III

Embedded image permalink

My Time by Jordan Rakei

There was a new ambience as I moved around the house tidying things up.

Change was coming.

Finishing up little projects here and there, and baby proofing the house, I was dealing with mixed emotions.

Wura was mere days away from putting to bed and I was nervously awaiting what would be the next chapter of my life.

Her cousin Suki, had moved in with us to help around the house with me gone at work.

Home wasn’t the safest place at the time.

So many nights after work, I would go straight to Sayid’s and hang out.

Beers, sports and hours of FIFA.

I knew Wura was about to deliver but it all made me even more nervous.

I had told her that Bimbo was also pregnant. Honestly, I think the only reason she wasn’t too angry about it, was the fact that she was also pregnant.

But I know it hurt her.

To think that there would be a competing child in my life as we raised ours was probably hard to take.

She never really made it known though.

The slow grind towards repairing our young but challenged marriage was evident.

We were working hard to reconnect and in many ways, naive or otherwise, we both secretly felt like the baby would bring us back as one.

I ran out of screws for the baby gate that was supposed to close off the kitchen.

Without informing anyone, I grabbed my keys and headed out the door.

I sat in the car and began to back out of the driveway. As I turned to look forward, I noticed Suki in front of the car motioning to me.

I stopped the car and opened the door.

That was when I heard her saying

“I think cousin Wura is in labor!”

I left the car door open as I ran back into the house.

Game day.

Our lives were about to change.

….

“You better fucking stand there!”

She yelled as she gripped my hand and her eyes bulged from it’s sockets.

My heart was racing and I could feel sweat dripping down my forehead.

Wura was so strong.

She kept pushing as the doctor asked her to. There was a new level of respect I had for her and all women that day as my wife challenged the forces of nature to bring my child to the world.

Seconds felt like minutes, minutes felt like hours and each hour felt like eternity.

I had read in one of the baby books that active labor lasts between 3-5 hours but we had been in there for almost 7 and nothing.

Nothing but Wura fighting hard to push through.

I stood by her side, holding her hands tightly. I just wanted her and the baby to be okay.

With each passing minute, I got more worried.

Something was wrong.

Was this punishment from God for the things I had done?

Was this the representation of the sins of the father being visited on the son?

I was scared.

And I couldn’t begin to imagine what Wura was going through.

As I was saying comforting words to her, the doctor called me aside and said they were going to do a scan to see whats going on.

I agreed and they stopped the active effort to force the baby out.

A drip was lined into her arm and a few seconds later, she was fast asleep.

That was the most sleep she would get for the coming months.

About an hour had passed as they wheeled Wura back into her room.

The doctor called me to the side and said

“Sir, we have two complications. The baby is not breathing anymore.

We have no heartbeat.

And her walls are too badly damaged to hold the baby… I mean force it out.

So we need to operate and get that baby out.”

I was stunned but he could understand the confusion across my face.

I gathered myself and said

“Will she still be able to have kids?”

He nodded and replied

“I believe so.

but for now, we need this baby out.

I’m sorry”

I nodded as he walked back into the room, a few nurses went in.

Minutes later they rolled her into the OR.

I couldn’t even watch.

My entire body was washed with guilt and regret.

This all felt like my fault.

There was so much self hate within me.

Sitting in the waiting room, I couldn’t contain myself.

I wanted to cry. I wanted to leave.

I wanted to be woken up from this scary and exhausting dream.

But such is life and the clock ticked on as the hours rolled.

And then I heard the doctor come up and call my name.

He said

“We were able to remove the baby. You can see her if you want.

And your wife is doing fine. She’s in recovery.

You can be with her.

She’s asleep right now”

I shook the doctors hand and thanked him as I walked towards Wura’s room.

There were tears in my eyes and my heart was bleeding.

I stopped in front of the room and took a deep breath.

Slowly opening the door, I noticed that Wura was still asleep.

Quietly, tiptoed and sat in the chair at the foot of the bed.

I stared at her peaceful face as she slept.

She looked like a badly beaten winner.

If only she knew what sadness awaited her as she would wake.

My heart just wanted to say “I’m sorry” for everything.

Even this.

My mind flashed back to the night of our wedding when we conceived this baby that was then taken from us.

I thought of the night before the wedding.

Playing back every step, so much regret filled me.

Then I became so angry at myself. I couldn’t take it.

As I sat there condemning myself, my phone began to vibrate loudly.

I scrabbled and muted it.

It was Sayid.

I got up, glanced at Wura and headed out of the room quietly.

I stepped into the hallway and said

“Hello”

Sayid responded

“Hows it going bro?

Has she delivered?”

I looked up at the white fluorescent ceiling lights, fighting back tears and sighed as I said

“We lost the baby”

Silence.

I could tell that he was shocked and he finally mustered

“…I’m sorry bro”

“It’s okay bro. So whats up?”

I replied.

He hesitated and said

“Bimbo just delivered. Twin boys”

I covered my mouth with my hand as I began to cry.

Oh Lord why?!

I couldn’t believe it.

I thanked Sayid as I hung up,

Planting my face into the wall, I wanted to scream!

This was just unfair.

I slowly peeled off the wall and headed back into the room.

I tried to sneak in, tip toeing as I made my way in. As I closed the door behind me, I turned around and there she was awake.

She looked at me with concern and said

“Where is my baby?”

I froze.

Those few seconds felt like an eternity. She shifted on her back, squinting in pain as she repeated

“Where is my baby?”

I never got a chance to respond.

She knew.

Tears began streaming down her face as she turned her back towards me and faced the wall.

I just stood there as she sobbed for a few seconds. Then I walked towards her.

As I was about to touch her, without turning, she screamed

“Get out!!!!”

I shivered.

She had never been that way with me. I felt it in my spine.

Turning around, I couldn’t get out of the room fast enough.

I just kept walking till I got to my car.

As I sat down, I grabbed the steering wheel and I just screamed!

I must have screamed for five minutes straight at the top of my lungs.

Tears streaming down my face, my head throbbing, heaving and sighing, I turned to my left and noticed a lady with her mouth ajar just staring at me.

That was my life in a snapshot.

It was the crazy movie everyone was watching.

……

Soooooooooooooooo…. STOP! Lol. Just for a sec!

So.. The Wordsmith’s birthday is coming up o! I heard this is now the move.

😊☺️ Birthday Wish List via

……

The days were normal. Tepid at best.

Our home was empty.

Our love was on the rocks.

And the bond between us was slowly waning.

A trying year had gone by with Wura and I repeatedly trying to save our marriage.

Nothing seemed to work.

Prayers were hard. Many nights, Wura would wake up at night and head into the living room to pray.

Her prayers reminded me of the story of Sarah in the bible. She cried and begged God with everything she had.

One night, I came out of the room at about 3am.

There she was on the floor of the living room, with a gospel soundtrack playing quietly in the background and two bibles opened in front of her.

She was sweating and crying as she prayed.

“Father, please remember me.

….Let people not ask me where my God is”

I joined her on the floor and we prayed for about two hours before we fell asleep.

We didn’t just go the religious route.

There was actual practical work done.

We started seeing a marriage counselor and Wura was seeing an individual therapist, as we both managed the loss that rocked our marriage.

One afternoon, I finished at work early and picked up Wura.

We picked up a frozen tub of stew from her sister’s house as she said she wasn’t in the mood to cook.

I tried not to inquire about her therapy session.

Traffic in Lagos was it’s usual hell but we finally made it home.

Pulling into the driveway, Wura grabbed her stuff and the food and headed into the house.

I grabbed my suitcase and my laptop bag and headed inside the house.

I grabbed the remote control off it’s stand on the wall and tuned the air conditioning on.

My plan was to change and take a quick shower before dinner.

As I made my way to the bathroom, I heard the doorbell ring.

I heard Wura’s footsteps as she walked to the door.

The door opened but I didn’t hear any sounds.

For a few seconds, it was quiet.

I was standing in the hallway when I said

“Babe, who is it?”

She didn’t answer.

I didn’t panic but I wasn’t sure why she wasn’t answering.

So I quickly opened the bathroom door and grabbed my robe, I threw it on to cover my nakedness as i walked to the door.

Turning the corner, I saw Wura.

Back to me, she was just standing there.

As I got up close to her, I said

“Wura, who is there?”

hearing how close I was to the door, she slowly moved out of the way and there it was.

Standing right in front of my door, were my two sons.

With their big bold eyes, they looked up at me and behind them was Bimbo’s brother.

Behind him, were a couple of packed bags.

I knew what was happening. Wura knew what was happening.

I stepped out of the house and shook his hand, he looked at me and said

“I’m sorry bro. All she told me was get them to their father”

I nodded and welcomed the boys in.

Wura walked straight into the room and began to cry.

The boys sat on the couch and curiously scanned the room.

I briefly left the living room to check on Wura. As I opened the door, she was sitting, sobbing with her head in her hands.

She turned, looked at me said

“They are not staying here”

The glare from behind her tears said it all.

There was not a single ounce of doubt in her mind.

She meant it.

When We Were Young by Adele

I was fucked.

My mind was racing at a million miles per second.

What was I going to say?

This was not one of those situations where saying a bit was enough.

I needed something big.

As I weaved through traffic, I was consumed by trying to figure out this thing and not so much guilt.

The guilt for what happened would eventually come.

But for now, I need these danfos (buses) to get out of my way and I need the Lord to come my way and save me.

As I turned the corner about 16 minutes from the venue, I finally figured out the first step.

Call Sayid.

I reached for my phone sitting in the cup holder and dialled his number.

He picked up on the first ring.

“Bro, please tell me you are outside”

He asked as I heard him make his way out of the room.

I cursed as I switched lanes and replied,

“Bro, I’m almost there.

I can’t explainnnnnnnnnnn”

Sayid was always the calm influence, he stopped walking, presumably now outside and in a “safe” space.

He said,

“Everyone thinks you got cold feet and bailed.”

I cursed again.

“Oh shit”

“Wura has been crying all morning and some people have been panicking.

How far away are you now?

He continued.

I glanced at the dashboard clock and said,

“12 minutes max”

He replied,

“Okay.

Get here as fast as you can. Your clothes are here.

I’ll inform Wura and the rest of the gang.

Hurry up bro”

The phone clicked and I dropped it on the passenger seat.

I heaved a huge sigh.

Part 1 cleared.

Part 2?

A respectable lie.

Oh don’t judge me! You’ve told a lie or two before.

You haven’t?

Well isn’t that a lie.

…..

My palms were sweaty as I put the car in park.

I hopped out and Sayid was right there waiting for me.

Some late guests were still arriving and making their way into the church.

I was scared.

Worse than the time I got arrested back in Canada. This one terrified me.

What was supposed to be the biggest day of my life, was now a huge mess and it was all my fault.

I ran into the room earmarked for the groom and his groomsmen.

Flipping my clothes, it was a complete makeover.

I went from looking like a cheating average man to the guy your company would bring in to complete a merger.

I was wrapping up the knot on the tie when I heard a knock on the door.

Without turning around and losing anymore time by walking to the door, I said,

“Come in”

The door opened slowly and Wura walked in.

“Diji, where the hell were you?!

I was worried sick!

Did you get cold feet?”

I walked over to her and placed my hands on her shoulders and said,

“Babe, I was robbed last night at gunpoint.

They took the car and threw me in the back. They took my phone and used my car to rob others.

They eventually drove me all the way to Mowe (a city 30 minutes outside of Lagos)

They kept me there with them all night. I begged them and told them I was getting married today.

It was only God in his mercy that allowed them to let me go.

I rushed here as fast as I could.”

She looked so concerned as she said,

“Oh my God!

Baby are you okay?”

I replied,

“Im fine love.

I just need to hurry up and wife your beautiful self up!”

She smiled and I said,

“I love you baby.”

“I love you too”

She said.

“Now go back out there so I can come and make this official”

She beamed as she hurried away in her elegance.

I was a lucky fool.

I looked at myself in the mirror and whispered to myself,

“God please help me”

What was I to do?

Oh how I wish I knew.

…..

Being married wasn’t as difficult as people have always made it out to be.

Between Wura and I, we began to come up with our own systems of doing things.

Communication was key and I honestly feel like being responsible for another allows us both of us, to do a bit more.

One of the things I loved about Wura as my wife was her effortless ability to drift within her roles.

From Marketing Guru to Home Manager; she was always on top of things.

Trying to make sure I was always happy and I truly appreciated her for it.

But there was something lingering in my chest.

Remember that guilt that I spoke about?

Yeah, it was consuming me. Preventing me from being happy with Wura.

I always wondered, “what if!”

What if she found out?

What if I got tempted again with Bimbo?

To be fair, it had been a month since I spoke to or contacted Bimbo.

We never even processed that night and what might have truly happened.

It was in the past and I wanted to keep it that way.

I was married now, with a new life and new approach. No need going backwards.

But I knew I had to let go of the baggage weighing on my heart.

It was 3:44am.

I lay there looking at Wura as she slept peacefully next to me.

How was she going to take what I was about to say?

Would I still keep my wife, my happiness?

My friend once told me that holding the truth from someone was down to human arrogance, to decide if someone deserved to be in the know.

I was scared and starting to doubt myself again.

I gently tapped Wura.

She didn’t move.

I almost took that as a sign to ignore it and just forget it. One more night to manage living a lie.

But something in me caused me to touch her again, and this time she slowly woke as I said her name,

“Wuraola”

“Mhmmm…”

She said as she woke up and cleaned her eyes with her left hand.

“What’s wrong babe”

She asked,

I sighed and said,

“Nothing. I need to talk you about something”

She seemed more awake now as she said,

“Okay babe. Talk to me”

I almost chickened out but it was like I heard a voice in my head that told me to go on. So I did, I said

“Wura, I want to start by saying I am sorry.

There is nothing you did to cause this. This is all my responsibility.

I want to ask for your forgiveness more than anything.”

She looked puzzled as she tried to keep calm.

“Babe, talk to me. Whatever it is, we can work through it”

If only she knew, I almost wanted to say that it was impossible to just overlook.

And working through it?

Well that would mean a tremendous amount of work and trust.

I turned to my left and looked at her as I said,

“The night before our wedding.

I lied about bring robbed and lost. I went over to Bimbo’s house to talk.

And we ended up having sex. When I woke up in the morning, I was running late.

I wanted to tell you but I was torn between telling you and ruining your special day or keeping it.

But I am tired of keeping it. I wanted to start the rest of our lives with honesty and this has been eating me up inside.

…whatever you decide to do now, I completely respect.

it was my mistake and even though I can promise it will never happen again, whatever consequences come my way, I am prepared to face.

I just want you to know I am deeply sorry and I love you”

She was crying.

She just stared at me and kept crying. It was extremely scary because I couldn’t tell what she was going to say next if anything.

I just waited.

After a few minutes, I said

“Wura, please say something.”

The crying was replaced with sniffles as the tears dried.

She looked at me and said,

“Diji, it’s okay. We will talk more about it in the morning.

I can’t think right now”

I couldn’t believe it.

It almost felt like a joke, a very expensive one. But true to Wura fashion, she turned over and closed her eyes.

A few minutes later, she was breathing calm and sleeping away.

I couldn’t sleep.

This was a Yoruba woman, a true believer in what is right, sleeping next to me.

The rest of the night till she woke up for work at 6:45am, my eyes stayed wide open.

No sleep whatever.

I couldn’t risk closing my eyes and waking up on the other side.

That morning, as we got up, Wura greeted me and we quickly went about our preparations for work.

At about 7:15am, I was ready to start heading out the door as Wura followed closely behind me.

Normally, I would get in my car in the driveway and back up to either to leave for work or to move so she could leave.

We had a one car lane driveway.

As I reached my car, I didn’t attempt to give her a hug or kiss like I normally would before leaving.

As I opened the door to my car, I turned and said,

“Have a great day love. I’ll see you when I get back”

She smiled and said,

“Have a great day Diji but I won’t be here when you get back… I need some time alone”

There was no use fighting it.

No use trying to change her mind.

Wura was not easily swayed and trying to force her to change her mind would only make her more upset.

I lowered myself into my car and I slowly backed out of the driveway. I waved at her.

She lifted her hand and waved back.

That was the last I would see of her.

……

Three months went by.

Wura had been living with a friend of hers on the Island.

She had sent her friend to pick up some things when I wasn’t home.

Basically, we were separated.

I didn’t tell anyone about us being separated except Sayid.

He was the only one that truly knew what I was going through.

I had tried repeatedly to reach out to Wura but she blocked all my efforts.

I knew she was clearly sending a message.

She wanted to be left alone.

That evening, I met up with Sayid for drinks at a place near his house in Ikoyi.

Mid way through the conversation, he asked

“Do you think you guys are done?”

I feared the answer to that question as I replied,

“Bro… I don’t know”

He sipped from his drink and said

“…I think you need to know.

You have to earn her trust back if you want to stay married to her.

Leaving her alone won’t work forever. You have to aggressively show her you are sorry and ready to be better.”

He was right.

He was almost always right.

But where would I start from. I feared the vulnerability of begging her and being turned away but I wasn’t considering that I had just violated her vulnerability by my act of cheating.

Something needed to be done. And fast.

In an attempt to lighten the mood, Sayid switched the conversation to soccer.

He laughed as he said,

“You better go and fight for your wife since your team Arsenal can never seem to fight for the title”

A huge smile covered my face as I prepared to reply,

“….Abeg shift, all we need is a few more good players and we are ready to….”

My phone started to ring.

It was an unrecognizable number.

I reached down and Sayid said,

“Who is it?”

I shook my head as I said,

“I don’t even know”

I slid my finger across the screen and said,

“Hello”

The voice on the other side was short and concise.

She said

“Hello Diji, it’s Bimbo.

We need to talk”

…..

I made Sayid come with me that evening as we drove to Bimbo’s house.

I didn’t tell her he was with me but I wanted him there incase anything funny tried to go down.

I could sit here and lie to you but daughters of jezebel are everywhere and men can be so weak; sometimes.

Sayid was convinced that going to her house was a bad idea.

But I considered the fact that if I allowed her to come to my house and Wura ever found out, I would for sure be dead.

I wanted to get this over with.

We pulled up and I asked her to come and meet me outside.

As she walked outside, she noticed Sayid was in the car with me.

I rolled down the window as she said,

“Hey Sayid.

Longest o!”

Sayid smiled and replied,

“Bimbo toh baddest!

Na you dey avoid us o!”

She laughed and said,

“you know thats not true o. Hows everything?”

“We thank Allah.”

Sayid replied.

Their greetings ended and Bimbo asked if she could talk to me in private.

I stepped out of the car and we walked about 15 feet away from it.

Bimbo started by saying,

“Thank you for coming in such short notice.

I really wasn’t planning on calling you.

You made your decision in getting married to Wura and I respect that… so this not an attempt to break you guys up or anything.

….I just wanted you to know that I am pregnant.

Before you ask, you are the only one I have been with since I moved back to Naij.

And I took multiple tests before confirming it at the doctors this morning.

I’m not expecting anything from you but I thought you deserved to know.”

I was in shock as I just stared at her.

She looked at me and said,

“Dj, are you okay?”

I gathered myself and said,

“Yeah..ya. Thanks for telling me.

I just need a moment to think”

Slowly, I turned around as she walked back into her apartment.

When I arrived in the car, Sayid asked me what had happened,

“She’s pregnant bro”

I answered as we turned onto the road.

“Yours”

He asked.

I nodded as I said,

“Yup”

He said nothing else.

And his silence said it all.

“SHIT!”

I dropped him off and he told me he would swing by the next day.

The drive home was silent.

“Oh no!”

I kept thinking to myself.

This was bad.

It was for sure going to break Wura and I.

I cheated once and now that one time produces a child.

A part of me wanted to scream so loud but I would just look like a mad man on the streets of Lagos.

I just wanted to get home and hide under my bed.

And never leave the room.

As I pulled into the driveway, I noticed Wura’s friends car.

Oh maybe she came to pick up some stuff for Wura.

I sat in the car for a few minutes as I gathered myself before heading inside.

As I opened the door, I turned the corner to my right to the living room.

There were suitcases sitting in the middle of the living room.

And Wura was sitting on the couch behind them.

I looked at the boxes and then at her, speechless.

She said,

“Hi Diji”

I didn’t even reply. My first reply was,

“Are you leaving for good now?”

She looked down at the ground.

My heart began to race.

Now?!

Today?!

How could this be happening today!

“Wura, are you leaving me?”

She looked back up at my scared face and said,

“No Diji.

I’m coming home.

We have a lot to talk about and work through.

I’m not leaving my marriage.

I’m coming home”

I heaved a sigh of relief.

Hurriedly, I rushed over and gave her a hug.

She was reluctant to hug me.

She looked at me with a half smile and said,

“Diji, we have a lot to work on and deal with.

I am not giving up on my marriage especially over things that happened before we said our vows.

Does it hurt?

Hell fucking yes.

But God heals and I’m willing to work and let you earn my trust if you are willing too.

I honestly thought of running but what good is that…Trials will always come.

But one thing is for sure, I am not giving up on this union and my vows to you before God and man.

… I am also not giving up on our family”

My eyes grew big,

My ears a bit wider.

Family?

I thought I didn’t hear her right.

So I asked,

“Family?”

She smiled and said,

“Yes.

Family.

I am pregnant Diji”

My face suddenly dropped and I began to cry.

Instantly.

I just sat there and cried.

My heart was happy but I was terrified.

How could this be happening right now?

Life was dealing me a cruel blow and it was going to hurt even more.

All I could think right then was #WhatTheHeckMan

Darkness.

Only a short while to go before the skies parted for the sun to arise.

You could hear the crows and their morning call.

In homes around the area, you could hear the moving engines that are people, as they prepared for the new day.

The keys clanked on the front door as I let myself in.

The cold from the Harmattan morning froze beneath my nails.

“I should have worn gloves.” I thought to myself as I dropped the mail on the receptionist desk. I was the first one here most days.

It was the safest place.

Church.

Cliche, as most people claim it as the home of their safety but it truly was that for me.

I have always had a questionable relationship with the church; or God.

But the events of the last few years have been truly humbling.

The way things moved or transpired, I continue to be amazed by how quickly it all changed.

And how everything I thought was not what it was.

I turned on the lights in the main auditorium.

Glancing at the huge wall clock behind me, the time showed 6:48am.

A few paces, and I was back to the technical department where I handled the visual display for the first service on Sundays.

Tuning things in preparation for the welcome chaos that was Thanksgiving Sunday, I realized that it was now 7am.

I needed to check if my brother, Dimeji, had woken up to get my sons Matthias and Tomas ready for church.

He was notorious for not waking up on time, the type to set 5 consecutive alarms to finally wake up.

I tapped my pocket and realized that I had left my phone in my car.

The keys to the church were sitting on the other end of the auditorium. I considered walking all the way across to grab them before going outside but I decided against it.

Figuring that if I left the door slightly open, I would make it to my car and back before the door could shut.

The phone was ringing as I walked back to the auditorium and then I heard it.

Click.

I looked up at the door, as I walked slowly, praying that somehow the door hadn’t shut itself.

By now, I’m sure you know how that went.

It was locked.

And there I was with my phone to my ear and then I heard Dimeji say on the other end in his slurred wake up voice,

“…What’s up bros?”

“Never mind.

Get them ready ”

I replied.

At that moment, the feeling of being stuck out in the cold was all too familiar.

I had made another wrong choice again but this time, someone would let me back in.

The last time I made a decision this big?

Well let me just tell you the story and you can decide how big your #WhatTheHeckMan would be.

……

“E gbe epo wa”

Roughly translating to “bring the fuel”

Voices piercing the skies laced with anger and discontent, in the familiar pandemonium that is Lagos. People gathered on the side of the street as the yelling continued,

“Eh! Eh!

Burn him!

Burn him!!!”

I didn’t immediately run over to offer my help.

The truth here is that through my time living in this state or even country, I have usually avoided situations like this.

There is an unwritten rule in the state that is home to one of the largest economies in the world; “mind your business”.

I turned to the right and headed towards the quickly assembling crowd. I moved my phone to my pocket and began pushing my way through the crowd.

“E file na”

“Leave him alone”

The angry crowd beginning to douse him in petrol, getting ready to torch him for some crime.

I quickly gathered that he was alleged to have stolen a woman’s purse.

Neither the purse nor the full story were confirmed missing.

But in the streets of Lagos, you are guilty till proven otherwise.

“E fi sile”

Translating to leave him alone I said.

“Maa fun yin l’owo”

I yelled at the top of my lungs. A few things make Lagos and it’s inhabitants popularly known as Lagosians tick.

Money sits atop that list, never troubled.

My last statement caused some of the parties involved to slow down.

The man was drenched in petrol and all that really was left would be the unfortunate presence of some form of a lighter.

“Let the man go, I’ll give you money for the purse”

I repeated myself as they began to let go of the man.

One man looked at me, unwilling to give up this opportunity to right the wrongs life had put him through. He said,

“Why?!

You know him? Is he your family?”

I almost smiled at his weak attempt at resistance. I reached into my suit jacket and pulled out my check book.

The lady in question and her defence team now shifted their focus to me.

It really was a smooth transaction.

She claimed to have items worth 400,000 Naira inside her purse, if you factored in her iPad and her phone.

A check was written up and I handed it to her.

She thanked me and left.

The man in question, rose up and began thanking me for saving his life.

I told him it was God and not my doing but I couldn’t watch him be tormented like that.

He continued to thank me.

I asked him where he lived and he said,

“Surulere”

After negotiating with a cab driver and paying him, the man was on his way.

I wasn’t entirely sure he was innocent but he didn’t have the purse with him for starters.

And who deserves to be burned to death over what was potentially fake leather.

I took off my suit jacket and opened up my car, placing it on the back seat. I grabbed my phone and it began to ring.

“Babe, where are you?”

She asked,

I could hear the stress in her voice. Who knew that planning ones glorious day, could bring so much preparatory stress.

I looked both ways before I crossed the street as I continued talking,

“I’m just walking into the place to check on the drink order and give them the deposit”

She sighed on the other end of the line as I opened the door into the building.

The receptionist greeted me with a smile and paused as she waited for me to finish with my phone call

“Babe, why are you just getting there?

You were supposed to be there an hour ago. you know we still have the rehearsal at 7.

We don’t have that much time”

I nodded as if she could see me. She was tense.

I was too but someone had to always level us out.

That was how we worked.

I smiled and reminded myself not to say “calm down”, unless I was looking to stare death in the face and prepared to lose.

“Wura, I’m coming.

I know you’re stressed. I’ll be there soon”

I could tell she rolled her eyes.

There was a way she always did it.

“Just hurry up!

I’m having to deal with all these people myself and it’s too much”

She hung up before I could respond.

I knew I had to get home as quickly as I could. Wura wasn’t one to “crumble” under pressure but if you know weddings in Lagos these days, you would know that pressure doesn’t even come close to what people go through.

It had been 3 years since I started dating Wura. The next day, our wedding day, would mark the beginning of the 4th.

And ultimately the rest of our lives.

Wura loved me.

I state that by itself because I want to emphasize it.

The woman loved me into my bones. To the places I never knew love could reach.

I had promised myself to never return to the place of vulnerability that love exposes.

Wura did it.

She found her own way to take my heart away.

Cliche again but she did and I had to find a way to pay her back.

Starting with returning to the rehearsal hall on time.

On my drive back, I got a call from a Tobi. My medical school buddy from Canada.

He was calling to inform me of his safe arrival back home.

I was pleased to hear his voice because Tobi introduced me to Sayid, my best friend, almost 12 years before.

Fresh into school and the cold days in Canada, Sayid and Tobi kept me connected to home.

Tobi had gone to University of Ibadan and introduced me to Sayid who had attended the University of Ilorin with me.

I never actually knew Sayid while at University of Ilorin, he graduated a year before me but we instantly hit it off.

It was always a great time around him from the music, to the stories and the constant laughs.

We grew close very quickly.

When I pulled up into the rehearsal hall’s parking lot, Sayid met me outside,

“She’s pissed bro”

I pressed the car remote to lock the doors as I walked towards the entrance.

There she was, ever so beautiful, even in her frustrated state.

I mouthed,

“I am sorry baby”

as I approached and flashed a smile at her.

She tried to fight her smile but she soon started smiling.

Inside, I was relieved because Wura had the tendency to go over the deep end if she felt slighted or disrespected.

The rehearsal was pretty painless.

“Stand here, walk this fast, look here… who will have the rings?”

For two hours and then it was all done.

There were some refreshments provided to the wedding party and other friends present before we all set out.

The guys were staying with me at my father’s house in Lekki while the girls stayed at Wura’s aunts house in the heart of Victoria Island.

I was the last one to leave.

Walking back into the hall, I headed all the way to the front.

I took my position as I scanned the room, in less than twenty four hours, I was going to be marrying the woman I loved right in that spot.

A quick flashback to where we had been as my eyes welled up. I quickly dried them as I began to recite my vows.

“Wuraola, you are the essence that gives my life purpose

Through loving you, I have discovered what life can be in many ways

To have someone in your corner

To listen to your troubles and your fears

There is something about the way you love me

That makes me want to be a better man

I am lucky to have found you

So Wuraola

I can’t promise to always know

But I promise that I will never stop at okay

I promise to love you with all of me

To protect you

Cherish you

Adore you

Honor you

Be your friend

And everything you need me to be along the way

I am thankful to God that I am about to embark on this journey with you

Thank you for loving me too”

There was a level of honesty to that piece.

It still brings tears to my eyes as I think of them.

But those were the words that rang true for me. Wura gave me a new purpose in love and I wanted her to know it.

I lingered around for a few minutes and then headed to the car.

As I sat in the car, I reached for my phone and noticed I had two missed calls.

I didn’t recognize the number, so I listened closely to the voicemail.

“Hey Diji, it’s Bimbo.

Long time, I know you’re getting married soon and I was just hoping we could talk before.

If it’s not possible, I understand.

I will just like to have one proper talk with you before you go off into the sacred land.

If that’s okay with you.

I’m staying at my place on the way to your house. Let me know if you can stop by.”

I listened to it twice.

Her voice still ringing between my ears as I placed the phone down. I hadn’t spoken to Bimbo in almost two years when I had called to let her know that I was proposing to Wura.

Bimbo and I had been together since before I went to Canada for medical school and we continued our long distance relationship.

Bimbo and Wura were completely different people.

Everyone that knew us, thought that I would marry Bimbo. The stars looked aligned for it.

We started out as kids and grew into full fledged adults. But life and it’s unpredictability happened and we broke up.

A lot of the things that happened between us could have been avoided; better communication I would say.

But Bimbo and I broke up and ultimately started dating other people.

When Wura came along, I was dating somebody else but we started out as friends.

Once that relationship ended, it was easier for us to start.

But I don’t think I ever stopped loving Bimbo.

Sometimes I had to convince myself that loving her was the wrong choice.

I rationalized the decision, but I always felt something was missing.

That night, I shouldn’t have gone to Bimbo’s house but I did.

I knocked on the door and a few seconds later, she answered.

No, she wasn’t dressed in anything sexy or seductive. It was just her.

The way her smile brightened my heart, I stepped in and hugged her.

There was a warmth that emanated from her.

It wasn’t just physical.

Suddenly, I started to feel like my coming there was a mistake.

I still had some feelings for Bimbo.

We began talking and catching up.

She told me that she had just gotten a job working for a law firm on the Mainland and she was happy to be back in Nigeria.

I felt my heart skip a beat.

Having to live so close to the woman I sometimes feel I should have married?

It wasn’t all rosy between Bimbo and I, our families for one did not get along or make any attempts to understand each other.

So we were always swimming against the current.

Hours had gone by and before I realized it, it was a bit past 2am.

Not a single bone in me wanted to leave.

So we kept talking and at one point, Bimbo suggested we watch our favourite movie together “The Usual Suspects.”

When I was in Canada and she moved to work in Tottenham, England; we would stay up late watching movies via FaceTime.

It was the first time in many years, that we actually sat down to watch a movie together.

Mid way through the movie, she turned over and whispered,

“Thank you”

I smiled and asked,

“What for?”

She looked down and said,

“For coming”

I smiled and she smiled too.

Enough was said.

…..

Darkness.

I slowly yawned as I struggled to get my eyes to open.

Scratching the side of my face and my beard, I twisted and turned.

A long stretch and I was awake.

What would happen next would change everything. I looked to my right and someone was sleeping next to me.

I was confused.

Where was I?

Then, it began to come back to me. I was at Bimbo’s house.

Did I sleep there?

Oh no!

My wedding!

I hoped to God that it was still early enough, I began to search for my phone.

Noticing it on the bed side cabinet, I reached up to get it. As I pressed the side button, the 46 missed calls did not stand out to me as much as the time did.

It read 11.52am.

I was a dead man.

I let out a squeal, waking up Bimbo as I cursed under my breath.

Oh, this was bad!

Really bad.

Bimbo slowly woke up and said,

“Dj, what happened?”

Standing at the foot of the bed cutting this dejected figure, I said

“I am fifty two minutes late to my own wedding”

She looked at me puzzled and reached for her phone to confirmed the time as she sprung out of the bed.

“What do we do?”

she asked.

I began to reach for my shoes on my side of the bed when I noticed an empty condom wrapper, right next to my left shoe.

I reached down and picked it up. Holding up, I looked at Bimbo and then back at the wrapper.

Swallowing hard and slow, I asked Bimbo,

“Did we?”

The look on her face said it all.

I just wanted the ground to open up and swallow me whole.

Through The Noise by Solace

My throat hurt.

My mouth was dry.

It felt like someone had choked me all night.

Or was it day time? I wasn’t sure.

I slowly opened my eyes

The lights were blinding. My eyes slowly adjusted to the lighting in the room.

Empty but for the wall clock.

The lights filled the room and and the only window was behind me.

I could hear cars in the distance from what I presumed was the freeway.

My mind raced as I tried to understand my current situation.

No clues.

I tried to turn to my left, the strap holding my right hand down pulled me back mid air.

I looked down to my right, my right hand was trapped.

Buckled under the straps, my hands and feet kissed the cold of the leather.

I didn’t bother trying to wrestle out of the hold.

My deep sigh rang out into the room as I remembered being taken away.

Those agents.

The gurney.

The back of that ambulance.

The lights.

My mother.

That woman.

My eyes suddenly began to well up.

Why did she do that to me?

Why would she let them take me away?

This place was familiar.

It felt familiar.

I remembered the buzzing sounds of the fluorescent lights. The footsteps in the hallway, the chatter behind the doors.

My mind collaborated with imagination of the world beyond the walls.

I smacked my lips as I wetted my tongue.

I could taste the drugs on my tongue.

And I could hear a voice, gracing the halls with a song.

The door opened and a lady walked in.

The lights seemed to dim as she walked in.

Her foots steps stopped by the bed side and I heard that familiar coarse voice as she said

“Rise and shine Anita”

I looked to my left where she was standing as she flashed a smile.

Her teeth trapped her lollipop stick as she said

“Time to eat. Your session is thirty minutes”

She strapped me down across my pelvic area and slowly released my hands.

I sat up straight and said

“I don’t want to meet with her today”

She walked around to my right side of the bed as she talked

“You have to. She’s coming a long way and she’s here to help you”

I looked at her and asked

“How long have I been here and what day is it?”

She smiled and sucked on her lollipop and replied

“You’ve been here 3days and its Monday”

I muffled my words as I sucked down the chocolate pudding that came with my lunch. It was the best part, believe me.

“So that means I should be getting released today”

She looked startled and said

“Why would you think that?”

I responded by saying

“…because you are a 72hr hold facility. So I should be released soon”

“She giggled and said

“Oh dear. You’re here on a 5250.

We are keeping you for 14days”

I stopped, my mouth full of baby carrots

I looked at her standing by the door

“Why???”

She looked at me and said

“Because you made suicidal and homicidal comments. So we have to watch over you and take care of you”

I snarled back and said

“Homicidal comments at who?!”

My tone shook her as she stepped back and said

“Your mother, I believe”

I cursed under my breath.

This woman wouldn’t let me be.

…..

I heard the keys clank on the metal door outside and then it opened.

My hands were still loose as I sat back and waited for her to arrive.

She smiled at me as she pushed up her glasses

She pulled her chair closer and said

“Good morning Anita”

I nodded and replied

“I don’t want to do this today”

She scribbled on her notepad and said

“Why?”

I rolled my eyes and turned to the left as I said

“I’d just rather not”

She asked again

“You know everything we talk about in here is confidential, right?”

I sighed and nodded as I replied

“Look, you want me to talk to you and then what? We have been here talking for days now and all you do is write and then you go away. You’re probably going to put this information somewhere my mother will find it”

She sat up straight and said

“I’m only here to try and help you. I don’t work for or with your mother. I just want to know what has caused you to see the world the way you do.

So can you tell me a bit about what happened between you and your mother”

I stared straight ahead and then I looked at her and said

“You may not believe me like the last person I told”

She again used her index finger to push up her glasses and then said

“Try me”

I laid back down on the bed and began.

“I was 13 when my dad died. About a year later my mother started dating another man.

At the time I didn’t understand it fully but as I got older, I realized she needed her happiness too.

So I tried to support it.

Things took a very painful turn when her new boyfriend started to rape me”

I paused for  second and tears filled my ducts.

I swallowed hard and then I continued

“I wasn’t sure what was going on. My mother never had the sex talk with me or advised me about anything really.

Best put, my mother and I were roommates within the home… she did her thing and I did mine.

I was first put in therapy after my dad passed because my mother thought that something was wrong with me.

I had always felt an animosity from her. Somehow she believed that my father loved me more than he loved her.

It was a really dark place to live in.”

She continued to scribble things on her notepad

I shifted in my bed and continued talking

“My school had a seminar around sexual exploitation and child trafficking.

It was then I understood the depths and the power of rape.

They explained how it was affecting my mental health, my relationships, my self esteem and even my trust in men.

I began to think of ways to talk to my mother about it… did I mention my mother was an alcoholic?

Whenever she got the chance, she would drink.

I always thought she was trying to drown something deep inside her… anyways, it took me about 3weeks but I finally summoned the courage.

That evening, I had returned from dance practice a bit late, about 9:30pm.

I remember walking into the house and greeting her.

She didn’t say much back to me.

She had been drinking.

I went into my and almost talked myself out of it.

It took me a little while but I finally came out and spoke to her.

I was shocked by what happened next.

She turned on me.

She told me that i was too young to know anything and that I was trying to ruin what she and her boyfriend had.

She basically accused me of lying”

“Your mother did?”

the psychiatrist lady asked

I nodded and said

“Yup.

I am not 100% sure but I guess she talked to him because for about a week after that day, he didn’t come into my room.

But then he returned.

And that night he was more aggressive. I couldn’t walk.

Everything hurt.

So that evening after dance practice, I went to speak with the older brother of a friend who I knew was in gangs.

I told him I wanted a gun. He joked and then I told him I was being raped.

He offered to take the shot for me.

I got the gun that night.

And when he came into my room the following night. I shot him.

And then I took 45 pills.

Somehow I woke up in the psych ward under evaluation.

I haven’t seen my mother since. For almost 10 years.

She just went off the grid.

The whole time in the psych ward, my mother never showed up.

The social worker came and I was told that my mother revoked her parental rights and I was now a ward of the court.

The devastation.

I wasn’t sad that I shot the man but to be honest, my mother shot me twice”

I looked at the psychiatrist and said

“Are we out of time yet?

The lady smiled and said

“Don’t worry. Today I’ve got time.

You can go on if you’d like”

For someone so used to bottling things deep inside of me, this felt good to release.

“Yeah.

She never came back.

And a placement wasn’t found for months.

While I waited, there was government testing done and I was picked.

The day I left the facility was the day I swore to never come back. Obviously, as you can see, that dream didn’t come true.

I vowed that day to get my revenge on my mother.

She changed the course of my life.”

It was clear she was intrigued by the story

I asked

“Is there any way I’ll be able to get out of the straps.

Maybe go for a walk. Its been days in these things and I’m only out for showers.

She seems unsure but she said

“I’ll see what I can do.

I’ll say something to the on call staff once we are done here…

So tell me… How has living without your parents and working for the government been?”

I smirked and said

“I’ve seen and done things. I’ve seen lives snuffed out of men with no regard for the families that they leave behind.”

There was a serious look on her face. It was a mixture of surprise and fear or maybe concern.

” is this where you’re going to ask me if I ever killed anyone?”

She paused and said

“Have you?”

I smiled and laid back down. The smile disappeared from my face as I said

“My cousin….

On my breaks from duty or assignments, I thought I could stay with him.

One night even with all my training, he overpowered me and raped me.

Somehow I think my handler wanted me to kill him.

They basically handed him to me on a platter.

It’s funny because I was out. I had told them that I wasn’t going to be a part of it anymore.

I was traveling back from Sudan when they cornered me and then I was left with two bodies.

I took care of it but I was back in.

Before I agreed to take on missions, I had clarified that above everything, the person I wanted to get to most was my mother.

So after many years of working with them and no success I was about to quit. They roped me back in.

What I don’t understand is how she got to me first though.

How did she find me?

It doesn’t make any sense but then all of his doesn’t make much sense to people”

The psychiatrist lady sat upright and placed her folder down on the floor right next to her left foot.

She looked at me and said

“Anita, I have to ask you an important question.

Are you open to it?”

I turned my head to my left side and said

“Sure”

She smiled back and said

“In your file, it says that while you were in the facility, when you were 14. It says that you were diagnosed as having PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” and Schizophrenia.

Those are heavy tags to live with, how do you feel about that?”

I sat up straight and said

“Here we go!

Now you’re going to think I’ve been making it all up!

This is why I never want to talk to shrinks!

They always act like I’m lying.

This is pointless”

She motioned with her hands as if to say “calm down”.

With a soft tone, she replied and said

“Anita, I’m not here to judge you. I’m here to learn about you.

So I can help you”

“It’s whatever!”

I chimed back.

The session was pretty much done at this point as I was starting to get really angry.

She leaned back and said

“I’m sorry if that upset you.

It was certainly not my intention. Before I leave, can I ask this?

Would it be possible to have a session or two with your mother to see if some repairs can be made to your relationship?”

I sighed and said

“Yes.”

“I know there are some difficult feelings between you two but I feel like with time and work, they are things that we can work through as a team.

How does that sound?”

She asked.

I smiled and said

“I’d like that.

Maybe finally my mother and I can talk after all these years.”

She asked

“So no animosity?”

I shook my head and said

“Not anymore.

Hate consumed me. I’m tired of it”

……

It had been about a week since that session.

They had moved me into another room. It had more things in it.

I was now out of isolation and allowed to mingle with the other residents.

I was out in the resource room when my name was called over the public address system.

I rushed over to my room and a few minutes later, at about 2pm sharp, there was a knock on the door.

The door slightly opened as the psychiatrist, Theresa, walked in.

She smiled big and said

“Hey Anita. How are you today?”

I replied and said

“I’m okay. You?”

“Very well thank you.”

she responded and continued to say

“…So I just wanted to confirm before we start today’s session, that it’s okay if your mom joins us?”

I smiled and nodded while saying

“Yes. I’m looking forward to it”

She smiled and said

“Thank you. I’ll be right back.”

I looked around my room and smoothed the edges of my bed. I was wiping down my desk when there was a gentle knock and a quick open

Standing behind Theresa was my mother.

The woman I went as far as joining the centralized government’s taskforce to find, was right here.

She found me.

It was bittersweet.

I ‘m not sure about how I still felt but I think a part of me was very relieved.

After all these years, to sit across from her.

She timidly walked in approached me and gave me a hug.

She said

“Oh my daughter, how I have missed you”

It was a long hug. A cold one.

We separated and sat down in our seats.

Theresa started by saying

“Thank you both for coming. I am happy this is getting under way. I hope we can all benefit from this as a group and even as individuals.

Anita, anything you would like to start with?”

She smiled and looked my way.

This time, I didn’t smile.

No affect.

She tried again and said

“Anita?

Is everything okay?”

I still said nothing. The puzzled looks on their faces was priceless.

It was silent for a few minutes and then I turned Theresa on my left side and said,

“Can you please give us a minute alone?”

She gathered her things and went out of the room.

I stayed silent and then I said

“Why didn’t you believe me back then?”

I looked her straight in the face. The cold in my face.

I just stared at her.

Then she broke the silence

“Anita, you were young and naive. You didn’t know what you were saying”

No change to my affect, I calmly said

“So you’re sure that was the only option. Not believing me. Your own daughter. You know how much that experience broken me. How much it took from me?

Affected my life and my relationships.”

She smiled and said

“Anita, there comes a time when you have to stop blaming others for your misfortunes.”

“Wait what?

You think I enjoy this? You think I loved living this pain?

The sense of worthlessness, that I don think I’m worthy of ta=

You’re mistaken and this was a mistake.”

I snapped back.

Before I could finish, my mother got up and headed for the door.

She said

“It seems this is not going to go anywhere and maybe I shouldn’t have come.

I wish you all the best.”

I got up and said

“Mom, wait, what, I’m sorry.

Can we please talk?”

She turned around and walked towards my outstretched arms.

I hugged her with my arms behind her back.

I removed my right hand and placed the handkerchief on her nose.

Holding the back of her head with force, I pushed the piece of clothing onto her face.

A few seconds later. She was out cold.

Laying lifeless on the floor of my room.

I walked to my door and opened it. I peeked into the hallway.

Clear.

I rushed back and grabbed my already packed back from under the bed.

I pulled her by her shoulders and out into the hallway.

I had to get to the garage as quickly as possible.

The cameras were going to get me but I was about to get out.

I ran to the door that led to the stairs. It had the “Emergency Exit Only” sign on it. The kind that would trigger if you opened the door without knowing the code.

The door was unlocked already.

Down the stairs I dragged her and minutes later, into the parking garage.

The night shift crew usually started at 4pm and worked till midnight.

Their change was coming up. The afternoon staff was about to do their rounds and they would have noticed that I was missing.

In the garage, there was a running van.

I ran towards it and jumped in the drivers seat.

Slamming my foot on the gas, I drove the van till I was by the door.

I hopped out of the car and yanked the door back into the building open, I dragged my mother out of the building and i pulled her to back of the van.

When I pulled open the double doors of the van, there was a big black box.

I climbed into the back of the van and dragged the empty box to the edge.

I stepped out of the van and lifted my mother into the back of the van.

Folding her body into the box was hard but I dumped her in there.

Head first.

And then I squeezed the rest of her body in.

I locked the box with the padlock and I jumped out of the van.

I rushed into the drivers seat and drove towards the exit.

There usually was a guard there but there was no guard that afternoon.

As I pulled up, the gate slowly opened and I drove out.

This was my city.

I weaved my way through the growing rush hour traffic and about 35minutes later, I was by the water side.

The same place Hazim had brought me back then.

I parked the van and left it running.

I jumped out as I slid some gloves on my hands. I yanked the van’s rear doors open as I climbed in.

The box was obviously now heavy.

I bent down and I pushed the box towards the door of the van.

I got down and dragged the heavy box to my desired spot.

There was a shovel sitting by the stairs that led to the water front. I grabbed it and began digging.

My arms worked as I dug away.

I could feel the sweat trickle through my braids and down the back of my neck.

My palms were sweaty beneath the gloves as I dug away.

There was an anger within me each time the metal from the shovel split the dirt.

I remembered every night with my legs wide apart as my mother’s lover violated me.

I remembered those cold nights in training camp where I actually missed her voice. I remembered the sound of the voice of the social worker as she told me my mother gave me up.

I remembered killing a man.

And another man.

I remembered dying.

Long before I realized.

She let me die. I remembered the way my heart raced as I opened up to my mother about rape.

I remember how she looked into my eyes and pulled the trigger.

And then I heard a noise.

It was a muffled sound coming from the box.

She had woken up.

I stood there heaving as I stopped digging.

I went closer to the box and right when I was about to open it, I heard another familiar voice.

“Anita!”

I turned to my right and at the top of the steps was Hazim.

He had a smile on his face as if to say “well done partner”

As he drew closer, I asked

“How did you do it?”

He smiled and said

“It doesn’t matter. What matters is that you got her. But I have to ask, did you really have to go through all this to get her though.

I know you knew that we had found her when she called you on the phone that day.

So why all this”

I smiled and said

“This was all a smokescreen”

I moved the shovel to my left hand and continued

“It was a distraction to my original plan.

Revenge was always my top priority but I wanted it to feel natural. She was always going to run from me. So I had to make it impossible for her to see me coming.

I was miles ahead.

Being taken into the psych ward was all part of the plan.

And her not seeing me coming, makes it even sweeter”

He smiled. Oh I loved the smile on his face.

It showed that he respected me and the lengths I went to exert my revenge

Then he said

“Well, I’m glad you are getting what you have always wanted. Since I met you, its all you’ve talked about.

Here you go”

Hazim handed me an envelope.

I collected it and peeked inside. it was the same gun, I shot my cousin with.

I smiled and I said

“Thank you Hazim.

Truly. For everything.

You are a true friend”

He came closer and he gave me a hug and a peck on the cheek.

He straightened his suit and said

“Are you really going to go through with it?”

I smirked and said

“What do you think?”

He rolled his eyes and said

“I don’t even know why I asked.”

as he turned around and began walking back towards his car.

He said

“Leave the van.

Someone will be here to take care of it soon…”

He was about 4ft away from me when I said

“Hazim..”

He turned around and

“BANG!”

I shot him.

Right in his head.

I walked over to the box and opened it.

There was my mother.

Shivering at the sight of the gun in my right hand. She had just heard the shot ring through the early evening sky.

I smiled and said

“Mother, can I ask you question?”

She didn’t respond. She just continued to beg

“Anita! Anita!! Anita!!!

I’m so sorry for everything… Pl..plea…pleee..Please let m…

Give me a chance to make it right”

My face suddenly became serious.

And then I asked

“When you had sex with him after I told you he raped me, did you heard my cries in your ears and in your head?”

She was still begging. I yelled

“ANSWER!!!!”

She continued to shiver and said

“Anita! I’m sorry!

Please I’m sorry”

I looked her in the eyes.

I could touch her fear.

I could feel her desperation. I could taste her tears from where I stood.

“Anita, I’m sorryyy…y..y.y..yyyyy…!”

“BANG BANG”

She went silent as life slowly abandoned her to the chaos that filled this world

And I whispered

“…I’m not”

I walked over to Hazim and dragged his body to the body.

It took me a few minutes but I forced his well toned frame into the box.

Both bodies in the box.

I returned to digging.

I turned to the left and blood was flowing onto the dirt from the corner of the box.

After about twenty more minutes, I walked over to the box and with all my strength, I dragged it to the hole.

I dropped it in hole.

I walked back to the van and opened the passenger side door. On the floor was a can of fuel.

I returned to the hole and bent down to open the box. I dumped most of the fuel all over the two bodies and set fire to it.

I dropped the can next to the hole and I walked back to the top of the stairs.

I sat down on the bench and lit myself a cigarette.

The smoke from my mouth sailed into the sky as the dark smoke from the hole filled the sky.

I smiled and kicked my head back.

One of the things I learned early on from working with Hazim was to always stay far ahead of your target.

Because if you let them get too close, you might still take them out but they have the chance to get to you.

Hazim was too close.

And I could eventually have become his target.

Call it paranoia but I would rather not take chances.

The sun was beginning to set over to my left.

I gazed up at it and puffed out another smoke.

A smile covered my face.

It had been a rollercoaster ride and I drove that shit without my seatbelt on.

Fin.

Some Days the Rain May Fall by Kim Churchill

The jig was up.

Rachel did it.

I was so relieved but heavy in the same breath.

The why was still unknown to us all but we were all curious to find out why it happened.

Mr Cornell looked at me with a smile on his face as we walked out of the room.

I still had this puzzled look on my face as I walked into the hallway.

Mr Ballazar looked at me and said,

“Mr Moka, we are truly sorry for the sustained inconvenience that this investigation has caused you.

I truly want to thank you for being cooperative with us.

You have my word that we will get to the bottom of this”

He concluded as he stretched out his hand. The handshake was limp.

I was still trying to gather myself.

Mr Cornell said,

“You wanna grab your stuff from the room that wasn’t gathered up or you want to wait with everyone else while they interview Rachel”

I didn’t reply. I just sat down in the hallway.

How could Rachel take Nora away from us?

My eyes were wide like they were being held in place.

I looked at Mr Cornell and said,

“When does my dad get in?”

He swung out his left arm and looked at the watch on his wrist and said,

“within the next couple of hours”

I replied,

“I’ll wait for him”

Mr Cornell said,

“Okay. I will speak to the department about your belongings we can take and find a way to get it to you before you leave.”

I nodded.

He walked away and a few seconds later, I got up.

I walked to the room where everyone was waiting. As I opened the door, I noticed Ballazar and another officer escorting Rachel out of the room.

She looked at me and I looked back at her.

She seemed surprised but how I was I to care what she thought.

I walked to my seat and sat down.

The vibe was different.

The looks were different.

They seemed to gather that if I was back, it meant that I wasn’t the one that did it.

I spoke to no one.

I still wanted to punch Bart in the throat but I just wanted my father to arrive and Rachel to be confirmed as the killer.

The wait was long, I was becoming impatient.

I got up and was about to exit the room when one of the officers in the room said,

“Sir, where are you going?”

I looked at him with disgust and replied,

“Detective Ballazar told me that I was allowed to wait in the hallway. So that’s where I’m going.”

The confidence and arrogance in my voice caused him to take a step back.

I opened the door and walked out of the room.

The seat I had made my own in the hallway was still open, I walked over and sat down.

I just wanted this rollercoaster to be over.

There were no answers yet.

No concrete answers.

There were still a lot of “whys” that needed answering.

There were two officers at the end of the hallway. Presumably there to prevent us from running away.

This investigation was unique.

We were on vacation far away from home and the officers could not risk anyone skipping town.

So almost every base was covered.

The door of the waiting room opened and Sai came out.

She said,

“Hey Sage”

“Hey”

I replied in my most solemn voice.

“How are you holding up?”

she asked,

“I’m not really sure. It’s been a mixture of emotions.

First I thought it was a murder, then I was accused and now they found out that Rachel did it”

Sai was shocked as she blurted out almost in a squeal,

“Rachel did it???”

she quickly covered her mouth as I looked to see if the officers in hallway had heard anything.

She whispered to me,

“Rachel did it?”

her eyes wide with surprise and in anticipation of my reply.

I responded and said,

“Well, there is footage showing her entering Nora’s room with a can of bleach. I think that says it all.

They are talking to her right now in there.”

Sai could not believe it.

“How? Why?”

She continued to ask.

I shrugged letting her know I didn’t have the answers to the same questions I needed answers to.

She turned to head to the bathroom when I said,

“Sai, I know you spoke to Nora before we all came here. Did she tell you what her big news was?”

Sai faced me as she dropped her head and then lifted it up as she said,

“She was in the process of being a surrogate for couple that couldn’t have kids.”

“What The Heck Man!”

It hurt just a little bit more.

……..

One of the officers in the waiting room with the rest of the gang came out.

He was holding a handbag and he walked into the room that was being used for the interrogations.

I wanted to find out what was going on.

There was a bit of noise coming from the room.

Rachel’s voice was raised,

I got up and walked to the door. I leaned on the wall as I listened through the walls,

“Yes we had a relationship but I would never kill her because of that.”

Detective Matthews said,

“We have footage that shows you heading into her room with a bottle of bleach. A ton of it was found in her system.

How do you explain that but that you drugged her?”

I heard someone I assumed was Ballazar say,

“Where is her purse?”

Rachel then said,

“Look through my phone. I got a text message asking me to come to her room with a bottle of bleach from Nora. That was why I took it there.

Because she asked me.

I loved Nora like everyone else.

I would never hurt her. I don’t know who wanted to hurt her but it certainly wasn’t me”

There was a pause in the room and I assumed it was because someone was browsing through her phone.

Shortly after there was some movement and steps. I stepped away from the wall quickly thinking that someone was coming of the room.

A few seconds passed by and no one came out.

I leaned back on the wall and heard Ballazar speaking to Max.

“I need you to verify that this message actually came from Nora’s phone. Was the phone ever recovered?”

he said.

I didn’t hear Max’s reply. I heard Ballazar continue.

“And why do we only have half the video footage?

How can I pin this thing on one of them if the video cuts out?”

Max replied audible enough for me to hear,

“The hotel manager said that on weekends, tape switches sides and reboots at about 2am.

If someone else went into her room that night, it’s not on tape and we may never know”

“Shit”

Ballazar cursed.

“We’re going to have to let them go. We can only keep them for 24 hours and it’s been way beyond that.

See if you can get me anything.

Anything.

Otherwise, they all have lives and our job gets a million times harder.”

I was about to peel off the wall and return to my seat when I heard my father say,

“Sage”

I turned and there he was with Mr Cornell standing next to him.

The door to the interview room opened and Max stepped out.

He seemed surprised that we were just standing there. He nodded respectfully and headed down the hallway and out of sight.

I smiled and said,

“Hello Father”

He barely responded. I just figured he was tired.

He looked over to Mr Cornell and said,

“So how soon can they be out of here?”

Mr Cornell was about to respond when the door to the interview room opened and Ballazar, Matthews, Rachel and one other officer walked out into the hallway.

Mr Cornell said,

“Well here is the man we all want to see…

Detective Ballazar, my client is ready to leave.

If you have an arrest to make, please do but we are ready to leave. My client has been very cooperative and they have our lives to return to”

Ballazar conceded defeat as he walked across to the waiting room and opened the door. Standing in the doorway, he said,

“Thank you all for your cooperation.

Our people will keep in touch with any developments.

We hope to find who did this and you all remain parties of interest until notified otherwise.”

Everyone in the room got up, ready to leave.

We all looked drained. It had been a long couple of days.

Hugs and goodbyes were due.

But it wasn’t fluid as it normally was over the years.

We were missing a key part of us. And not all of us had come to terms with that.

It was a solemn goodbye.

To our trip and to our friend.

There was an air of the unknown as we began to put our luggage in our various cars. I shoved my suitcase into the trunk of my father’s rental. I didn’t even properly pack, I just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible.

We were about to get into the car when Max and Detective Ballazar ran out and stopped us.

Ballazar said out loud as some of the others put their things in the airport shuttle

“Ladies and Gentlemen, sorry to keep you again but I am requesting that you turn in your key cards to your hotel rooms.

It is true that there was a loop in the video but we realized that if someone actually went into Nora’s room to poison her, they would have needed a key and we can try to identify what keys were used.”

Everyone looked puzzled and then Bart said,

“That makes no sense.
Only the key to Nora’s room would have worked to enter her room and it could have been Nora entering and exiting her own room after the video was off. Couldn’t it?”

Ballazar smiled and said,

“You are definitely right but we are trying to account for everyone being in their own rooms.

If anyone stepped out of their rooms during the window we are speaking of, those people would be our focus. They would have needed to use their own keys to return into their own rooms”

That made sense.

That really made sense. Slowly people began to reach for their own keys.

I couldn’t find one of my keys but so did a few people. Who would have thought to keep their hotel keys in light of what was ruled as a murder?

Up until Rachel was spotted with the bottle of bleach, it was never concretely confirmed as a murder but I had thought too, why was it never considered to have been a suicide?

Couldn’t Nora have taken her own life after all?

What if everything was overwhelming for her and she decided to end it all?

Yes, the whole idea of her being a surrogate suggested that she was full of life but people have taken their lives with less at stake.

None of that would matter though as Bart turned the entire investigation on its head as he said

“I can’t find my keys and this is stupid. I’m leaving”

We all turned and looked at him.

No one expected that and his tone sounded like that of someone with something to hide.

What The Heck Man was in order but we were all now suspecting him, where were the answers going to come from?!

…….

I was sure it was the last roll of the dice for Ballazar and his people.

But it didn’t work. There weren’t enough keys retrieved and Ballazar had to finally let us go.

And this time for real.

Goodbyes again and by now, we were really exhausted.

I climbed into the passenger’s side of the car and my father started the car.

I let out a deep sigh.

I just wanted to be home and back in my apartment.

In my own bed.

In my space.

Alone.

We climbed the turn pike and headed onto the highway. My father had said nothing so far, so I spoke,

“Dad, you know you didn’t have to come down right?

We had it all figured out”

My father said nothing and continued to drive.

This took me back to days as a child where I would get in trouble at school and my father would say nothing the entire ride home.

He would then chastise me and then dish out my punishment at home but these were two grown men here.

I didn’t even need to be in the same car with him.

“Dad, you’re not going to say anything?”

I said.

He went a few more yards and then he pulled over to the right shoulder of the highway.

He reached for the ignition and turned the car off.

Pressing the hazard lights, he turned to his right and said,

“Sage, I only have one question.

Did you do it?”

I looked him square in his eyes.

What?

What did I just hear?

How could he ask me that?

That rage began to build inside me again. What kind of a stupid question was that?

he continued and said,

“Before you get all angry, I would just like an honest answer.
So my conscience can be clear.

We both know what happened the last time we were in a situation like this and how long it took our entire family to get over it all.”

“You want to fucking bring that up!

You could have said something but you didn’t. You did not!”

My voice was raised as I pointed my finger in his face as cars fizzed past us.

“Me?!

What was I supposed to do?

Give you up?!

Give my own son up?!

You were everything I had left”

He replied.

“No, you idiot.

You should have confronted her and left her when I first told you that she was cheating,

instead of acting like a ball-less bitch that you are and said nothing!

….. I was the one coming home to her everyday with another woman in our house.

She acted like I was stupid or like I wouldn’t figure that she was in love with another woman because that stuff is not common?

You could have stopped all of that by confronting her and leaving her ass but your bitch ass didn’t say anything like you won’t say anything this time around.

Yes, I drugged her fucking bitch ass….

She came to have sex with me and in the same fucking bed, she was writing in her stupid journal on her phone that she was sleeping with other parties in the group.

That is disrespect and I am a man. I will never be disrespected.

She had to go.

She had disrespected me for years. Enough was enough!”

My dad just stared.

I think he was partly in shock because of how loud I was screaming but also what I had just said.

He finally gathered the words to say,

“So you killed another innocent person?

Because you felt they disrespected you?”

Even though I was panting and trying to catch my breath, my response was calmer,

“Mom disrespected our family with her stupid acts. This girl felt like she could ridicule me in front of people for years.
So I handled it.

You didn’t.

I drugged her and the rest was history.”

His eyes filled with shame. His head dropped.

I continued and said,

“That day, I walked in and the stupid woman, I forget her name tried to play off the fact that she didn’t just finish fucking my mother.

They were fucking when I got home from school that day like many days before.

I had it. So I snuck into her room and used the syringe I had gotten from a friend while exploiting some drugs. All I needed was a deadly mixture of Hydroxycitronellal (a tropical base found in perfumes) and a bug killer solution. Both things that the police would have easily believed she would have come in contact with in her day to day.
I stabbed the bitch and mom tried to fight me when she came out of her room. I punched her head and knocked her out then I injected her between her toes. She never woke up.

Done.

They had to go.

Nora always thought she was better than me. Better than us.

Well, she can’t think that anymore now can she?

You weren’t going to divorce mom because you thought she would take half of your stuff. Well, I did you a fucking favor!

You are welcome.

Now can we fucking go?!”

My father was overwhelmed with regret. I could feel it but at that point I was so angry I didn’t care.

He said,

“I was in the process of divorcing her.

They served her papers the day you killed them.

You are evil Sage”

I could see he was close to tears.

I replied,

“Evil?

You are just as bad because that day when I called you before I called the police, I told you all that had happened and you never said anything. Just like you are not going to say anything about this.

So shut your sorry ass mouth and let us go”

“Sage, what have I ever done to you for you to be this horrible to me?”

He said as a single tear streaked out his right eye behind his glasses

I smiled and said

“You never had a backbone. Mom had one stronger than yours, that’s why she thought it was okay to cheat on you.

Pathetic.

Men are not supposed to be weak and you sir are weak”

He turned and sat straight up in his seat. It was like a moving truck had run into him.

He looked devastated.

He slowly turned the key to start up the car. One more glance to his right, I could feel all respect he had for me disappear.

It felt like he had come out there hoping that he would be wrong about me being responsible for Nora.

His face looked like it did when I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder as a teen.

Powerless.

The cabin of the car was warm, so I wound the window and reclined my seat.

He merged back onto the highway and I closed my eyes.

I woke up about 30 minutes later to voices of people and we were at the airport. My father and I did not say goodbye to each other.

I just grabbed my bags and headed to my gate for my flight.

I went through security pretty easily and arrived at my gate.

Another short wait and we were boarding.

I felt myself finally relaxed as I sat in my seat.

No one had expected it but I was through.

My plan was to land in California and relax. My father was not the type to snitch on his child, so I felt pretty good.

I buckled my seat belt and waited for takeoff as the crew did their final cabin check.

My head was leaned back and my eyes were closed as I waited to hear the pilot announce that were about to takeoff.

The voice never came over the public system.

And suddenly I heard a familiar voice say,

“Mr Moka”

I opened my eyes and looked up, it was Detective Ballazar.

The jig was really up.

…….

“How did they know it was you?”

Charles my new cellmate asked me.

“My father”

He looked surprised.

“I thought you said he was not the type to snitch?”

I smiled as I got up from my bed on the lower bunk. I stood up and said,

“I thought so too but apparently he called them right after we got to the airport that evening.”

Charles asked,

“Did he get jail time too for keeping your secret all those years?”

I shook my head and said,

“Nope.

He was their key witness. He claimed he was afraid for his life.

His testimony put me in here”

“Wow. Thats rough”

Charles said.

It was rough but it was life.

The bell rung and the guards walked the hallways saying,

“Stand by”

It was time for our single hour of the day in the yard. And then dinner.

Charles climbed down from the top bed he was sitting on and stood next to me in front of the door.

I looked over and said,

“What is someone as young as you doing in here anyways?

What you in for?”

He didn’t smile as he said,

“Murder, attempted murder and grand theft…”

I shrugged and said,

“True”

We waited and then Charles asked again,

“What happened to the rest of your friends from that weekend?”

I smiled and said,

“Many different stories and outcomes in life. Too much to tell.

How many years you got again?”

“23 before I can apply for parole”

he replied.

I responded as the doors automatically opened.

“Oh we got enough time then…”

Charles said,

“How much time you got left?”

I stepped into the hallway as it got crowded with other inmates and said,

“Three whole life sentences”

His face totally said it all. You know how it goes…. #WTHM

The End

Are you shocked? Upset? Caught off guard? Did you think it was someone else?
I have often found that in most situations, our biases, perceptions and reservations contribute to the opinions we form about certain things. Some of you might have thought Sage was the killer from the jump but the reality is that most of you didn’t.
Because of you views on love, “nice guys” and such but sometimes the answer is right in front of you and other times, you have to dig for answers. (NOT GOING THROUGH HIS PHONE!!!)
There are Sage’s out there, pretending to be people they are not and such. There are other people like Rachel, Bart, Nora but there are also people like Sage’s father who see things and keep quiet.
Suffering in silence if you will.
There are abusive manipulators and liars out there. Avoid them when you can but if you ever get caught in the web of one and make it out, help someone else.

Nora would probably be alive if Sage’s father had spoken up.
Silence can be it’s own death.
Speak up when necessary, you never know who life or who’s heart it might save.

Lights Off by Charlie Cunningham

Silence.

I could hear my own breathing.

I was feeling so outcast. I didn’t do it.

But in the court of public opinion, I was sure that I had been labeled as the one that hurt Nora.

I stared at the wall. It was a nervous wait.

I knew they would send my father’s lawyer who had also been present during the case involving my mother.

It was like waiting for your test scores on a multiple choice test where you were sure the results would come, but unsure of what they would look like.

The clock ticked on as I watched the hands move around the sphere.

I was so tired.

I placed both my hands on the table and placed my head on it as I began to fall asleep.

Only about ten minutes the door burst open. It was Ballazar holding the open and my lawyer; Mr Cornell walked in.

Ballazar and Matthews sat across Sent from my iPhone

“Did you do it?”

I shook my head as I whispered lowly and said

“No I didn’t”

He looked into my eyes and he was ready to go. That was how he worked.

He always truly believed his clients.

It was the same way he spoke to my father when he came to our house after the murder of my mother.

This man defended my family and he was always present to support us.

Mr. Cornell started off by saying

“I would like for my client to be left alone if there is no real reason for holding him here except suspicion and hearsay.”

Ballazar spoke.

He was the arrogant one but the more experienced of the two.

“Well a few hours ago, we only had accounts from other or hearsay as you called it…

and now the rape kit test and the biopsy have come back and it shows some scarring and bruised tissue inside her privates.
There was also a high solution of latex presumably from a condom.

We found a condom wrapper in your room Mr Moka”

I was getting infuriated.

Now he was claiming I raped her???

She came to me!

How would I have been ale to rape her with one foot?

“I did not rape her. Yes we had sex but that was in my room and she came to me.

Why would I need to rape someone who…”

Mr Cornell jumped in and said

“Sage, I’m going to advise you not to answer any more questions”

I blew him off as I said

“No, it’s okay. I’m being wrongly accused here and it’s going on for too long.

Nora came to me that night, we had sex and when I woke up in the morning, she was gone. That was all I remember but I know I for sure did not hurt Nora.”

Ballazar laughed and said

“Isn’t it convenient that you cannot remember whether or not you killed a woman but you remember sex with the same woman?
How I see it, you wanted her. She said no. So you raped her and then poisoned her or maybe poisoned her and then raped her. Some of you young men are filthy nowadays”

I was filled with disgust and if I could jump across the table, I would have punched him in the face.

I leaned over the table and said

“You have got to stop telling me,, I did anything to that woman. I loved that woman and wanted her for years.

Why would I now kill her when I finally had a shot with her?

That’s just stupid and I’m not stupid.”

Matthews jumped in and said

“We also found a bottle of Hennessy in your room and she had a high level of alcohol in her system.

There was also tissue found under her fingernails… So she got a piece of her rapist”

“Take my sample. Test it!”

I snapped back at them.

Mr Cornell leaned in towards me and said

“You don’t have to do this. They have no reasonable proof”

I replied

“I have nothing to hide and I’m tired of this”

Mr Cornell said to the detectives

“Since my client is cooperating and not been declared a suspect, we would like to leave.”

Ballazar said

“You are free to go but don’t . We may have further questions as things develop”

I got up and headed out of the room. My lawyer held the door open for me as I walked out.

The door closed behind us and I dropped down into a squatting position.

My legs felt weak. That pain in my ankles was back and my insides were riddled with fear.

I know I didn’t do it within my heart but it was sure looking like I did with every moving step.

I was beginning to think I might have done it and not known.

The confusion and fear was now killing me and all I could think was #WhatTheHeckMan

……

I sat down on the seat in the lobby with my head in my hands.

This process was overwhelming.

Familiar but overwhelming.

I was also accused when my mother died. It was just a floated possibility back then.

It obviously didn’t stick because I was younger and my alibi checked out but how many people have to defend themselves on two murders in their lifetime?

What if they didn’t believe me?

Some think OJ Simpson got off easy on the murder of his wife and associate but he still ended up in jail years later because of another offense.

Karma maybe?

What if people thought I was just a killer going around killing people?

My lawyer stood next to me and said

“I’m going to subpoena the video footage from the hotel if there is any and have my guy look over it. I noticed some cameras when I walked in.

I’ll also try to get any information I can off the autopsy report.

I’ll be back in a few hours… In the meantime, do not speak to anyone without me present.

Alright?”

I nodded without saying a word as he walked to the exit.

He stopped and said

“Oh btw, your father said he is flying in. I’m not sure when he will be getting in but just wanted to let you know”

I sighed heavily as I just wanted to give up. The pressure was starting to get to me.

It was coming. But I was worried about what would happen next. I straightened myself and headed into the room they had everyone waiting in.

I could feel all their eyes piercing me as I walked in. You could tell that they thought I was guilty. It was painful to watch and you could feel the tension in the room. I almost didn’t want to be there but I also didn’t want to be the only one off in my room to further contribute to suspicion.

I took my seat in the back of the brightly lit room and stayed silent.

We must have been sitting there for another 45minutes or so when Phillip blurted out

“I don’t know why they have kept us in here for this long. I’m tired and I want to go”

Dillion responded and said

“We are free to go. We are not under arrest but what can you do in these circumstances.

Nothing. So let’s just calm down and wait”

It all seemed handled until Beth said

“I don’t know why they continue to keep us here when they already know who did it…”

She said as she stole a glance my way.

“Exactly, when people think it’s okay to harm other people because they won’t be with them.”

Bart chimed back.

I felt so targeted and I was already on edge, I didn’t realize when I was up and screaming in Bart’s face

“Who the fuck are you to say that to me?

You know I would never hurt that woman you son of a bitch…

Fuck you Bart”

He was also up and in my face as Dillion and Phillip tried to separate us.

“You’re a fucking bitch!”

I yelled out. All I could see was red as I got angry. I wanted to punch him in the face.

The guys eventually successfully pulled us apart and I was huffing and puffing as I headed back to my seat.

Bart continued cursing under his breath until Sai said

“Bart that’s so rich of you. Weren’t you also all over Nora for the longest time and never got any. Does that make you a killer. Ease up”

Bart said

“Correction we actually had sex a few times even before she got into her relationship and her engagement. So yeah…”

Sai replied

“Yeah and i don’t think you made that much of an impression on her. And don’t sit here and play like you weren’t trying to get with her even when we arrived on his trip. She told me

The last time Nora and I spoke before this trip, she said she had big news to share with all of us.

And she was excited to see all of us. So let’s all be patient and let the police to their job. I’m sure she loved us all and we cared about her too but fighting won’t bring her back”

She was right but more information had come out. I was surprised as a few other people.

I never knew that Nora and Bart had a thing even though I wasn’t shocked.

This was all getting crazy.

I sat there trying to remember the night again but I wasn’t able to connect the final piece of the night.

All I had was up until I slept off.

What happened that night?

What happened to Nora?

The door opened up and the detectives walked in and Ballazar said

“We heard it was getting crazy in here. Everything okay?”

He scanned the room and said

“Who was the lady that discovered the body again?”

Rachel raised her hand and that was when I noticed her. She had been so quiet.

I figured she was just still in shock or hand processed that Nora was gone.

Ballazar said

“We want to thank you all for your patience. We have been working down a lead and we think we might have something.

Nora’s online journal was discovered and as we speak, our guys are combing through it to get any more information we can.

We know you would all like to return to your busy lives and we will have you out of here as soon as we can”

He looked over my way and turned around to exit the room. There were two police officers inside the room with us but they weren’t engaging us.

They weren’t giving us answers, I said a quick prayer as I hoped Nora’s journal would have some answers.

…….

The nights are hard.

During the day, I barely remember being engaged.

Well once engaged.

Life and it’s distractions have been so helpful because I haven’t been dwelling on it all.

There is a stigma however subtle that comes from a failed engagement.

But I am happy.

I realized late that I didn’t want to be in that situation but I’m so glad I realized before it was too late.

Dating would be interesting but I’m enjoying the attention I’ve been getting already.

Everyone seems to be doing well for themselves and that makes me feel good.

I love my people. ️😍

Bart needs to chill with the advances tho. I’m not making that same mistake again.

Dating within your group of friends can be so hard because when you eventually break up and believe me you will, it can crush the entire group.

Oooooooh! I saw Sage today for the first time in a few years that man is fine!

Too bad I don’t want a boyfriend right now but

If he makes a move, he can definitely get it. Or maybe I’ll just go and get what I want. Those big arms and chiseled chest.! How did I even miss it that he became so handsome? 😑😖😞😕

Anyway, I need to get some of him before I leave.

Rachel said she wants to talk to me but idk what about again. I think she may still be upset with me pulling out of the dynamic. I mean it was fun but I like dick too much soooooo… 😊😊😊

She’s been super quiet lately but we’ll see.

Anywho, I’m just glad that gang is together again….

I’m excited to have fun and be had… It should be a great weekend…

I’ll come back to tell you all about it..”

Those were the words entered into Nora’s journal the day we arrived on the trip. It wasn’t great surprising but it shed light on someone we all might have been missing the entire time; Bart.

My lawyer showed up with a man with him. The man introduced himself and I can’t seem to remember his name right now but they came into the waiting room with Ballazar and Matthews. Signaling to me, my lawyer said

“You’re going to want to see this”

Everyone sat up straight and wanted to know what he was talking about. We walked into the room they were using for interrogations and the man with Mr Cornell put a computer on the table.

He began to play a video and Ballazar said

“Is this footage from the hotel?”

My lawyer said

“Yes”

Ballazar replied

“My guys are already on this.”

Mr Cornell replied and said

“I bet you do but it would take your men days to go through all of it. I had one of my guys devote all day to it out”

Ballazar said

“How can we know it’s not been edited? I need to verify it”

He stepped up and walked to the door. He opened it and spoke into the hallway

“Send Max here please”

A few moments later, a man I assumed to be Max walked in.

Ballazar asked him

“Is this the same footage we got?”

The man nodded and said in a low but audible tone

“I actually wanted to let you know that we got something. I think we might have been focusing on the wrong person”

Ballazar looked confused and turned to the man and said

“Who?”

Max was about to answer when Matthews said

“Isn’t that you Mr Moka coming out of your room and walking into Nora’s room?”

I squinted at the screen but I didn’t need to.

It was me.

I was watching myself go into her room. There was a dead silence over the room.

I was scared.

Maybe I did it but I couldn’t remember it. I could figure out what I would have been doing in there.

What The Heck Man

I was beginning to panic and Ballazar said

“So you brought us the video to show us that your client committed the crime?

I don’t know if I should thank you or advise your client to fire you”

He laughed as he spoke. Mr Cornell replied

“Just be patient and watch”

I wasn’t sure how this was supposed to get better for me and then I saw myself again.

This time leaving Nora’s room.

Looking completely normal as I had gone in. Besides I was thinking to myself, for me to have gone into her room, Nora must have opened the door because you would have needed a key card to open it.

I feel better but only a bit.

I walked out of the room but nobody knows what might have happened in there.

Mr Cornell said to his associate manning the video

“Speed it up a bit”

He clicked something and the video sped up a bit but it showed Nora coming out of her room, coming into mine and the shortly after leaving to hers with a glass of something in her hand. It must have been my Hennessy.

So I guess we drank together.

But it showed Nora was alive at the last time I saw her.

She had been poisoned though, so I could have done that in my room.

My lawyer told his guy

“Cut to that shot you found on the second floor”

The man pressed some keys and there it was. The clearest clue as to what happened that night.

There was someone walking into a maintenance closet but their back was to the camera.

A few minutes later the person emerged and now their face was visible to the camera and everyone watching. The next shot they showed was off her walking into my room with a white bottle in her hand and then leaving minutes later.

Ballazar said

“Oh no”

Mr Cornell leaned back in his seat and smiled

I was still in shock as Max said to Ballazar

“Yeah, that’s what I was trying to tell you”

I didn’t realize when I said

“Oh my God… I can’t believe it”

Mr Cornell said

“We couldn’t believe either but the video doesn’t lie”

My eyes wide open. My left hand was covering my mouth.

I could feel my brain working overtime, trying to wrap my head around it all.

I moved my hand as I said

“Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my fucking gosh. This entire time.

This whole time… Wow”

I looked at Max’s face and said

“It’s Rachel”

He nodded back. I didn’t need to say it but #WhatTheHeckMan was written on all their faces and yours right now.

Lights Off by Charlie Cunningham

I sat there frozen.

Somewhat glued to my seat.

It felt like I was watching a horrible scary movie where I knew how it would end but couldn’t speak.

I tried to play the how, understand the why and fathom the when, all in my head.

How could I tell them that I had seen her the night before?

What happened? How was Nora dead? Did someone hurt her?

There were murmurs in the lobby. All our activities for the day were cancelled as we tried to wrap our heads around this thing that has shaken the core of the group to its foundation.

Was it someone in our group?

A robbery gone wrong?

Eight hours had gone by now and we were all in our rooms. Nobody seemed to want to be seen. I laid in my bed as I remembered the night before.

I continued to play out scenarios in my head. The fact that the officers hadn’t told us what happened didn’t help either. It only gave our minds free range to craft and build stories in our heads.

I couldn’t imagine someone within our group wanting to hurt Nora. I continued to lean towards the theory that it was a robbery gone wrong. I think this was because my mind didn’t want the rape theory because it would mean that I was fucked. My touches were all over her. My skin probably under her finger nails.

I would be the prime suspect.

Fuck.

I needed answers. I needed Nora to not be dead.

At this point I had truly forgotten about the pain I was feeling in my ankles when I heard a knock on the door.

I opened it up and there stood a police officer along with a hotel employee.

“Mr Sage Moka, would you mind coming down with us”

I followed them slowly and when I arrived at the small conference room Dillion, Sai, Beth and Rachel where already seated. The others arrived shortly. There were some officers standing around. It almost felt like a holding cell.

We all sat down and two men came to address us. One of them came up and said,

“As you all know, there was a tragic event that occurred to one of yours sometime ago. My name is Detective Ballazar and this is Detective Matthews and we are just here to ask you some questions, so we can get to the bottom of this.

Hopefully this doesn’t take too long and you can all return to your lives”
They randomly called us in, or so I thought but I was the 4th one to go in.

Beth, Rachel and Phillip had all gone ahead of me.
When I walked in the room, the detectives were pleasant and then the questions came.

My biggest concern was, would they take my word as my word or will I be judged or be a suspect.

Detective Matthews said,

“Mr…Moka, can you account for whereabouts last night from 10pm till 3am”
I replied quickly,

“I was in my room. With a sore ankle. You can ask all my friends.”

He nodded and then asked,

“How would you describe your relationship with your group of friends?”
I was surprised by the question but I answered,

“It’s a good and fluid relationship with all my friends”

Detective Ballazar would jump in and say,

“So from the background check we ran on you, it seems like you’re familiar with the system. A huge incident with the law a few years back in Arizona?

Do tell us about that please”
I dropped my head.

I guess it was true what they said, sometimes you cannot outrun your past.

…….

“Dad, there’s something I need to talk to you about.”
He looked down from the radio system he was fixing as he said,

“What is it son?”

There was so much honesty in his eyes. I swallowed hard.

I panicked.

I wanted to tell him.

It’s something I knew he had to know but the how was something I struggled with.

My father was my protector.

We had that cliche father and son relationship. We played sports together, supported the same teams, he came to all my Lacrosse games, my recitals. He taught me how to cook as my mom worked.

They had such a beautiful understanding that encouraged me towards commitment and faithfulness.

I could talk to him about everything. I remember the first time we had the sex talk.

I was 12 and a few days before my 13th birthday and a girl at my school had promised me a kiss and a blowjob.

I didn’t know what one felt like. I remember coming into that same garage where my father worked on the radio chips to ask him. That was his “home office.” My mom hated when he started a new creation there because he would always make a mess. She was a top Avon distributor in the community and we knew all the families. I played with all their kids while our moms had skin product dates.

My father was a top microchip developer for police radios and emergency equipments. He had a lab just 15 minutes from our home but absolutely loved working in the house. Occasionally he would travel for days and sometimes weeks for seminars and expositions.

Whenever I had to talk to him, he would always give me his full attention, no matter the issue.

He had the same initial look of concern on his face as I told him.

He then smiled and explained it all to me. He told me I could say no but as a young man, he knew I wouldn’t, especially since all the other boys in my class had been getting theirs.

He just made sure that she was not a “group girl”; one that had been with many of my friends.

She wasn’t but the head sucked. My little wiener was bruised up. I probably should have told my dad that she had a retainer in her mouth.

Oh well.

My father looked at me and said,
“Son, what do you want to tell me?”
I looked up at him from where I was sitting and I lied.

“Nothing important dad.”
I replied.

He looked from the top of his glasses and said,

“Ooookay… Just know that I will be going to the plant and not back till Friday for your game. If it can wait, then okay. If not, then talk to your mother before I get back”
He knew I was lying but he never pushed. He always let it come naturally.

I left that night heavy in my heart but it was something so heavy I needed a bit more time to think.

It didn’t take me very long to gather all my thoughts. That weekend, my father and I set out on a drive to one of my games with my friends.

It was a playoff game and if we won, we would move on to the regional finals.

I was pumped and I remember playing a really good game but we eventually lost.

Gutted, I tried really hard to keep a straight face.

I walked to the car and my dad said nothing.

I hopped into the back seat and slumped into my seat.

My dad waited a few minutes before saying,
“Sarge Sage”
That was the nickname he gave me growing up.
“Losing only means one thing, you have a reason to come harder next year.

To work on your game and play better next time. From the way you have played all season, your team didn’t lose because of you and you played your hardest. You can be proud of that.”
He stopped talking and didn’t look into the rear view mirror. It felt like he knew that making eye contact would probably open the floodgates.

I fought back the tears and I remember clutching the seat.

A few minutes had passed. My father started up the car and slowly turned around and faced me. He said,
“Sage, it’s okay to cry. We can talk it out and you’ll feel better.. It’s never impossible to…”
He was mid sentence when I blurted out,
“Mummy is cheating!”

He froze. The look of concern on his face turned to sadness.

He was stunned. I was shocked.

I don’t know how it came out. I was relieved it did for a split second but the sadness and eventual pain my father would feel made me regret telling him.

He turned back around in his seat and started out the car. He slowly reached for the key in the ignition and turned it off.

His mouth was dry as he began to tear up and without turning around, he asked,
“Who is he?”
You see, that was the problem for me.

There was no he.

……

“How did you find out?

Did she tell you she’s thinking of leaving?”
My dad asked those questions seeking answers to calm himself down. This was a sucker punch.
“I saw them”

I replied.
“Who?”
He asked for second confirmation.

I looked into the rear view mirror and made eye contact with him and then I said,

“Ms. Wagner”
It didn’t hurt any less that my mother was cheating with a woman. I think the sanctity of what they had being broken just flat out hurt.

He swallowed hard but slow and asked,

“Are you sure, son?”

I nodded as if I wished it was truly not so.

He followed up by asking

“How did you find out?”
“I came home from school early a few times and saw them. The first time was on a minimum day at a school and the other time, I came through the garage and saw them on top of each other. In the kitchen… On the counter. I remember because it was Comic Con weekend and you were in Seattle for the week”

My dad never turned back or made eye contact the rest of the way.

That drive felt shorter than most even though I had fallen asleep a few minutes after he started driving.

When we returned home, it was business as usual. My dad was pleasant to my mother as he always was in front of me. They never fought in my presence.

I was expecting a big blow up like in the movies later that night.

It never came.

Nor the day after or the one after that, I began to think that my father had accepted his fate. My mother was in love with someone else but he wasn’t going to rock the boat.

I was wrong.

Boy was I wrong?

…..

Blood.

So much blood.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. The foyer was covered in blood.

Ms. Wagner’s blood. It was all over.

I had returned from school that day to a sight that would be forever etched into my memory like Mt. Rushmore.

Two bodies.

Two lifeless bodies.

Hopes and dreams dashed. Families affected.
In movies, you normally see the person that discovers the bodies, all hysterical, scared and loud.

I had the opposite feeling.

I froze.

My mind began to race. I was thinking how, and why?

And then my mind went to my dad. I knew he would be the prime suspect.

They would come for him.

A crime of passion?

Was this why he didn’t confront her?

It didn’t make sense to me but I knew for sure that my father was not a killer.

I walked over to my mother’s body laying on the ground. There were no open wounds in her body.

I checked her pulse.

Nothing.

I walked over to the phone and speed dialed my father. He answered and I said,

“Dad, mom is gone”

I couldn’t tell if the reaction I got from him was fear or confusion but he was back home in Arizona about 3hours later.

Historically, Arizona has not been the most welcoming to the African American population so this storm was something of a media storm.

Think OJ Simpson.

The headlines would read,
“Broken Chip: Shocking Death of Tech Exec’s Wife and Friend”

“Double Homicide or Crime of Passion”

And so on.

The media tried to spin this in so many ways.

My father was a suspect because he had only left on his trip that morning after dropping me off at school. There was window before his flight.

There were so many different permutations and theories. I was sure my father was innocent.

The case was nothing but straightforward though. In my parent’s room, my dads bags had been packed.

On the kitchen counter, the divorce papers my father had filed were found.

Leading people to speculate that he was planning to run away anyways hence the packed clothes or that he served her the divorce papers and they fought.

That was what was crazy about this case, there were no wounds on her but Wagner had been stabbed.

Why kill Ms Wagner?

Oh and the knife used to stab Ms Wagner you ask?

It was in the kitchen sink. Washed clean.

No prints.

Not a single one.

In many ways, this could easily have pointed squarely at my father but the man was miles away when it happened.

But coroners can’t give you a specific time of death, just a time frame. They certified my mother died of poisoning but how remained unknown.

The double murder shook our lives to the core.

The detectives worked tirelessly.

They tried to come after my father but got nothing.

No charges were ever brought against him.

But one thing always seemed to confuse me, why Ms Wagner was at my house was never explained. My father never told the story of how she was cheating and I never did either.

I guess I learned a lesson on secrets very early on. The thing about secrets is, they never stay hidden forever.

……

Detective Ballazar asked me,
“So what was your relationship with Ms. Lamar”
I leaned back in my chair and said,
“We were friends. Good friends.

We have all been friends for years”
“Good friends?

Are you sure about that Mr Moka because that’s not what we’ve heard.”

I became concerned and I sat up.

I tried to look as confident as I asked the detectives,
“so what did you hear?
Detective Matthews leaned back in his seat and said,

“Well, we heard and I quote that you and Nora had a tumultuous relationship. A few years ago, you had a big fight and you have reportedly.. And I quote… Always liked and wanted her.

Is this true?”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Nora and I?

Where would they have heard that if not from one of the people in our group.
I tried to keep a straight face to hide my growing fear as I said,

” I don’t know who told you that but Nora and I were great friends. And I cared for her and respected her”
Detective Ballazar said,
“Cared enough to kill her because she didn’t want to be with you?”
“Why would I kill her?!

We we’re friends. You can ask anyone, I was even supportive of her engagement…”

Ballazar cut in and said,

“You mean the engagement she called off?”

I paused

I didn’t know that.

When did she cancel the engagement? Why did she cancel the engagement?
I asked,

“I didn’t know that the engagement was off. When did this happen?”

Detective Ballazar smiled and said,
“That’s irrelevant but here’s what I think happened. I think you have always wanted her and she’s turned you down.

She became single again and you thought you could make another move. You did and she still shut you down. Soooo… you poisoned her and killed her”
All I heard was poison and I knew this was serious.

I immediately said,

“I need my lawyer”
Ballazar smiled and said,

“Smart decision”

As they exited the room I placed both hands on my head and planted it in into the cold table as you all say it with me #WhatTheHeckMan

Wish Me Well by Timi Dakolo

“Why would you even say anything to me?

Because we hung out a few times?”

She barked out at me.

My attempt to express myself had failed and there I stood like an idiot with no words to defend myself.

“You’re nice to niggaz and suddenly, they think they have a shot with you”

I just was.

Like a newly unveiled statue, I was stuck in place.

She had obviously had a bit to drink and we all had but I had never expected that outcome.

Nora was the first friend I had made when I moved to California.

She was smart, funny, beautiful and the captain of our college’s volleyball team.

She had the body to match her brains and she was loved by everyone.

When I had showed up on campus late that spring, it was already too late to sign up for classes.

Nevertheless, as part of the student body, she gave me a detailed tour and even showed me the library codes and such before my summer start date.

From the moment I saw her as I walked into that office, I knew she was out of my league. Trying to get her to be mine would be futile but I always admired her from a distance.

I started school as a transfer student that summer and when Nora invited me to a bbq she was hosting, I was surprised.

After I met her that initial day, I had gone about my business and focused heavily on school.

I didn’t even think she remembered me but I got the text and I showed up.

Nervous.

It was at that event that I met the gang 6 at the time excluding me. The crew would eventually grow to eight great friends who navigated life and our careers together.

But this memorable incident of Nora yelling at me was later during my first summer in school. She was angry because I had made a move on her.

Presumably thinking that I made a pass at her because she was tipsy but the truth was, we had hung out a lot that summer, so I thought that there was something between us.

As if we all have never fallen for that before.

Nora went off on me that evening but it was okay. No one overreacted probably because they knew we were friends.

And I never brought it up again. I also never directly spoke to Nora that night again.

As much as I liked her and had the biggest crush on her, my ego had been destroyed and I was not going back.

Everyone had their spats in the group but we just ignored it and pushed ahead with life.

It was always viewed as “one of those things”.

We would eventually outgrow those phases in our lives and forget them. Or so I thought.

…..

Everyone found their seats in the van as we took off.

Our guided tour of the Yosemite hills was about to start. Everyone was still a bit sleepy as we set out.

The annual “Gang Linkup” was kicking off again. It had been 4 years since the last one of us graduated and 6 years since that incident with Nora.

As we all dispersed all over the country in our various walks of life, we made it a point to always keep in touch and the biggest way was through our group trips we took once a year in the beginning of the summer.

We had arrived late the night before but every minute was to be maximized.

The hour long ride to our starting point was filled with jokes and stories as we all fully embraced the day with the sun rising on the horizon.

It might have been a challenging hike but the trip was a great way for us to relieve stress as our busy lives were put on pause for 3 days every year in the heat of May.

It was always during the Memorial Day weekend and I had missed it the year before.

I had just completed my Geology certification up in the Bakersfield where I had been posted for the last 2 years. I was nervous about what the future held but my nerves kicked in when I saw Nora again. I still had a thing for her but I never shared it with a single soul.

Besides she was in a long term relationship the last we saw, so I always admired from a distance in silence and in fear that she would actually notice me.

You may have gathered my confidence had not always been at the highest but I skated along. I had lost a lot of weight in the last year and was starting to find my feet.

There was a rumor she had recently gotten engaged but when we arrived she was alone and with no ring.

I had asked a friend who suspected they had broken up but wasn’t sure.

As we marched behind the guide on the hike, I kept my space between us. There were about 3 people between us as she marched in front of me. The hike was grueling but a lot of fun.

As the culture of the group, jokes flew all over the place and the hot sun couldn’t keep us down.

We were in the decline as we headed back to the car after the 3 hour hike and I was coming down a steep angle when I slipped and rolled forward with speed, past everyone in line and I landed at the base of the hill.

Many things hurt but I was sure that it was my ego that was bruised the most.

I lay there as the guide asked me not to move. I closed my eyes as my sun glasses had fallen off somewhere during the fall. The sun was slapping my face and I stayed on my back.

Frozen.

My brain was now registering the pain and just then I felt a touch on my shoulder, it was Nora.

“Are you okay?”

She said. I tried to force a smile.

She must have skipped past almost everyone in front of her to have gotten to me first.

My heart skipped a beat as she continued to rub my shoulder.

And then it started to pound in anger; anger towards myself that I allowed my long term crush to see me at this moment of weakness. I tried to stay strong as they lifted me off the ground and then I realized that not only my ego was hurt but my ankle might have been broken too. It hurt like a horrible credit score.

I had to be helped into my room by the hotel concierge as I tried to recover. The air conditioning was blasting and the TV had the local new house running through highlights on of the Minor League Baseball Championships. I just wanted the pain to go away. My left ankle had been badly hurt but thankfully we had figured it wasn’t broken.

I heard a knock on the door and I said,

“Come in”

I thought it was the room service with the ice I had asked for but the door opened up and for the second time that day, there she was, Nora.

“How are you feeling?”

She asked with that beautiful smile I loved so much across her face.

I was about to answer when she hoisted a big bag of ice up in her hand.

“I’m staying next door and I heard you call for ice so I decided to get it for you.”

I was trying to sit up as she said,

“Relax. I got it”

Notice I hadn’t said anything. Well it was because my heart was hiding under the bed and my mouth… well my mouth was on its own vacation somewhere in Neverland.

She reached on the table and grabbed the ice bucket and headed into the bathroom, she emptied the ice in a bucket and kept some on the bag.

She came back and wrapped the ice bag around my ankle with tape. She looked at me and said,

“So how’s Cali been to you?

You’re done with your program right?”

I looked at her and said,

“Yes”

“How about you? How’s Nursing?”

I’m asked,

She said,

“It’s cool. I love the work except the long hours and early days but overall it’s been great. I’m looking to leave the Virginia though. I miss the sun”

“How does it feel now?”

She asked from the foot of the bed as I was not sitting up in the bed.

She turned and our eyes met.

That was the moment. She smiled and slowly walked on her fours towards me.

Yes, my heart returned home to my chest and was now beating like a crack head energizer bunny.

I was not sure what was happening but my member was well aware of the situation between my legs and rising like the economic power of China.

She got to me and she climbed on top of me and looked into my eyes before pausing and then I leaned in and kissed her.

Her lips were even better than I had always imagined.

So soft.

Baby soft.

They tasted like fresh grapes bursting with flavor in my lips.

I wanted more. I laced my arms around her as I pulled her in and then she turned and her right leg hit my swollen and wrapped ankle.

I squealed and she got up quickly apologizing.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry!

Does it hurt?”

I nodded as I stifled the pain.

She patted it down a bit before she looked up.

A wry smile spread across her face.

She reached up and ran her hands under my shorts. I twitched and she said,

“I think I have something that will make it better”

She pulled my shorts down.

Fast.

My rock hard member in all his elegance was reporting for duty.

Upright.

I think the size surprised her a bit.

She smiled and reached her hand into the ice bucket.

A handful in her left hand, she began to kiss down my shaft.

I was in dreamland.

Clutching the sheets, I think it was even sexier that she maintained eye contact as she continued down to my balls.

Then she did something that shocked me. She placed a few small cubes in her mouth and took my throbbing member in her mouth.

She placed her hand filled with ice right under my ball sack, clutching it.

The cold soared through my spine and I had never felt that before.

The contrast was crazy. Her mouth was cold from the ice but her lips working up and down my shaft was heating it up. My balls shriveled up and into hiding near my body but she worked her hand around the sack and her tongue up and down my dick.

I wasn’t sure how I was meant to moan but it felt so good.

She dumped the ice in her left hand in the bucket and pulled one cube.

She ran it from my inner thigh up to my shift again. She placed it in her mouth and went to town on the head of my very happy member. I couldn’t hide how good it felt making all sorts of ugly faces as she worked on me.

She placed both hands on the base of my shaft and worked together with her lips up and down.

I must have dreamt about what was happening like two million times in my life and it was finally happening to me!

I could feel myself getting ready to enter that level and cum but I wasn’t sure how this was meant to work.

Was I supposed to let it out in her mouth?

Or not?

What if she didn’t like that?

I was thinking and trying to concentrate on what was happening when she lifted her head up. On her knees, she stood straight and took of her blouse as she asked me,

“Did you have any condoms?”

My eyes grew big.

Really big.

Oh! Not because of what she asked but because of her perfect set of boobs that dropped out of her bra as she unclamped it. I was in the presence of beauty and I felt myself cum at that moment.

She ripped open the condom wrapper and slid it down my shaft.

I clutched the sheets as she slowly lowered herself onto me.

The pace was controlled as she stayed on top the entire time, since I couldn’t move my legs.

I stared up at her and she smiled down at me and it was then I knew. I had felt so strongly about her for years; I was in love with her.

She leaned in and kissed me.

We were both panting for air as she cuddled into my arms. I couldn’t believe what had just happened.

Nora?!

With me. After all these years?!

I was mind blown and confused at the same time.

I turned and kissed her forehead. She smiled and without looking up, she said,

“That was so sweet. I could so get used to this”

I pulled her in closer and squeezed tighter. Sleep invited itself in and shortly took over.

…..

Morning came and I felt very different.

Like incoherent.

I could remember being with Nora but when I woke up, she wasn’t in my bed.

I figured she had gotten up early to return to her room.

We had to be in the lobby for breakfast and to go jet skiing that morning.

My ankle felt a bit better as I limped my way into the shower, got dressed and headed down.

On my way out, I noticed my bottle of Hennessy had been opened but I didn’t pay any mind to it.

I arrived at the lobby and we all started to dig into the food laid out in front of us.

The morning grub was necessary for a long day as we had a city tour and a water tour later in the day.

My usual was already in my hand; a chocolate croissant with a cup of tea.

Black.

Everyone filled into the lobby as we all began to eat and chat about the day before and the day ahead.

Questions about my ankle and its durability for the activities of the day were raised but I wasn’t going to be the one to miss out, so I lied that it was fine.

It really was fine.

It was still sore but generally okay.

About 25 minutes had gone by and I was there with the crew.

Dillion – a chemical engineer

Sai- a social worker for a psychiatric hospital

Beth- a marketing exec at a startup

Phillip- an info systems tech guy

Rachel- an alternative Ed entrepreneur with her own school for autistic kids

Bart- a medical student and future doctor

Sage- Me; a Petroleum geologist

And as you noticed we were missing one last person; Nora.

“Where is Nora?”

Rachel asked as she scanned the room. Everyone turned around and realized she wasn’t there.

I had noticed earlier that she was not down from her room yet.

In my mind, I was gloating that even though we had sex with me at 55%, she still wasn’t able to wake up on time.

Sage with the “good good”, I thought to myself.

Rachel soon left the room as she said,

“I’ll go and get her. She probably drank too much last night and over slept”

Up the elevators she went as we all continued to talk.

A few minutes later, the lobby staff started running from behind the desk.

Both employees ran to the front of the elevator. They pressed the button and about a minute later it opened.

Pensively, they ran in and pushed another button as the door closed.

I looked up at the number above the elevator and it kept going,

“1….2….3…..4…..5….6”

And then it stopped.

That was my floor and Nora’s floor. It was then I sat up straight.

A scary feeling started up in my stomach.

No way, I thought to myself and then I heard the ambulance sirens blasting from down the street.

Everyone else oblivious to what had just happened stopped and looked at each other in confusion.

The gurney was brought out and in few minutes the EMT’s disappeared into the elevator.

Fear had now set over the room. Rachel had been gone too long and the ambulance showing up was not a good sign.

Rumblings started as we begin to mildly panic.

The elevator opened up and the EMT’s rolled out the gurney with Nora on it.

Rachel was closely behind them.

They lifted her into the back of the ambulance and took off.

We all rushed towards Rachel and almost collectively asked,

“What happened?!

What’s wrong with Nora”

Rachel’s head was dropped as she tried to speak.

Tears now streamed down her face as she said,

“Nora’s dead”

Remember that uncomfortable feeling I mentioned in my gut? Well it disappeared and was replaced with a numb chilling feeling.

I sat back down and thought what all this meant.

All I could say was “WhatTheHeckMan”
